The Best AI Subtitle Generator

Most people scroll past your video with the sound off. Subtitles keep them watching, and AI can now write them in minutes. The hard parts are free plan watermarks, caption files you can actually upload, and names the AI gets wrong. Here is what we would use.

THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes, AI subtitle generators now caption most clear speech in minutes, though you should always proofread names and jargon. For most creators and small businesses we recommend Kapwing: Pro is $16 a month billed yearly and includes up to 1,000 minutes of auto subtitles and 500 minutes of subtitle translation a month. If you want to spend nothing, Microsoft's Clipchamp makes auto captions free for all users and lets you download an SRT file.

AI captioning is a mature, everyday feature in many editors with free tiers, though accuracy still drops with accents, background noise and unusual names.

Kapwing: our pick

Free; Pro $16/month billed yearly or $24 monthly

Best for creators and small teams who caption and translate videos every week in the browser.

Kapwing puts a large subtitle allowance, translation and a full editor in one browser tab. Pro includes up to 1,000 minutes of auto subtitling and up to 500 minutes of subtitle translation a month, exports up to 4K with no watermark, and handles videos up to 120 minutes long Kapwing pricing ↗. Its pricing page lists SRT and VTT subtitle file downloads, so you can upload captions to YouTube or a course platform instead of only burning them into the video Kapwing pricing ↗.

Pro is $16 a month billed yearly ($192 a year) or $24 billed monthly; Business is $50 a month billed yearly with 4,000 subtitle minutes Kapwing pricing ↗. Everything runs in the browser, so a team can share projects without installing software.

The free plan is only good for testing. It gives up to 10 minutes of auto subtitles and 5 minutes of translation, exports at 720p with a Kapwing watermark, and caps each export at 4 minutes Kapwing pricing ↗. The pricing page does not say which plans include SRT and VTT downloads, so confirm before you rely on the free tier for caption files Kapwing pricing ↗.

Why we like Kapwing

  • 1,000 subtitle minutes a month on Pro
  • 500 minutes of subtitle translation on Pro
  • SRT and VTT downloads listed
  • 4K, watermark free exports on paid plans
  • Runs in the browser

Where Kapwing falls short

  • Free plan watermarks every export
  • Free exports capped at 4 minutes and 720p
  • Plan for SRT downloads not stated

Clipchamp: best free option

Free; Premium with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family

Best for anyone who wants free auto captions and an SRT file without a watermark.

Clipchamp, Microsoft's video editor, says its autocaptions feature is free for all users and that there are no limits on generating subtitles for a video Clipchamp subtitles ↗. It advertises subtitles in more than 100 languages, though its speech recognition detects one language at a time, so a video that switches languages mid sentence will need manual fixes Clipchamp subtitles ↗.

You can download the transcript as an SRT file, the format most platforms accept Clipchamp subtitles ↗. The free plan also exports up to 1080p with no watermark, which is the main reason it beats other free tiers here Clipchamp pricing ↗. 4K export and a brand kit need Premium through a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription Clipchamp pricing ↗.

The trade off is fewer subtitle specific tools. Clipchamp exports only SRT, not VTT Clipchamp subtitles ↗, and its subtitle page does not mention subtitle translation minutes or a human captioning option like those at Kapwing, Happy Scribe or Rev Clipchamp subtitles ↗.

Why we like Clipchamp

  • Auto captions free for all users
  • No stated limit on subtitle generation
  • SRT download
  • 1080p exports with no watermark on free

Where Clipchamp falls short

  • Detects only one spoken language at a time
  • SRT is the only transcript format
  • No human captioning option

Basic $8.50/month billed yearly ($17 monthly) for 120 minutes

Best for small businesses that need clean subtitle files in many formats and languages, with a human option.

Happy Scribe is a transcription and subtitle service first, not a video editor. Its pricing page lists AI transcription and subtitles in more than 150 languages, AI translation in more than 80, and export to more than 15 subtitle formats including VTT on Pro and Business Happy Scribe pricing ↗. You can also burn subtitles into an MP4, watermark free on paid plans Happy Scribe pricing ↗.

Basic is $8.50 a month billed yearly or $17 monthly for 120 minutes a month, with SRT export but not VTT Happy Scribe pricing ↗. Pro is $19 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly for 600 minutes, and Business is $59 yearly or $89 monthly for 6,000 minutes Happy Scribe pricing ↗. Extra minutes cost $0.20 each Happy Scribe pricing ↗.

When captions must be right, you can pay for people. Human proofreading starts at $2.00 a minute Happy Scribe pricing ↗, and its help center lists human made English subtitles at $2.25 a minute in US dollars Happy Scribe human subtitles ↗. The free plan is only a 10 minute trial of AI transcription and subtitling, and burned in MP4 subtitles on free carry a watermark Happy Scribe pricing ↗.

Why we like Happy Scribe

  • Free plan is a 10 minute trial
  • Basic exports SRT only, not VTT
  • Not a full video editor

Rev: best when captions must be exact

Free 45 AI minutes/month; human captions from $1.99/minute

Best for businesses publishing training, legal or public video where every word must match.

Rev sells both AI and human captions from one account. Human captions start at $1.99 a minute with a 99 percent or better accuracy promise, and human foreign language subtitles run from $6.49 a minute for Spanish and Hindi up to $15.99 for Japanese and Korean Rev pricing ↗. Rev says human captions and subtitles support all major file formats Rev pricing ↗.

Its AI plans are pricier than the others here: Essentials is $25.49 a seat a month billed yearly or $29.99 monthly, with 5,000 AI minutes per user a month Rev pricing ↗. The free plan includes 45 AI minutes a month but is English only Rev pricing ↗. Subscribers get 3 to 15 percent off human services depending on plan Rev pricing ↗.

For a creator posting short clips, Rev is overkill. It earns its place when a wrong word costs more than $2 a minute, such as compliance training or a video a public agency must make accessible.

Why we like Rev

  • Human captions from $1.99 a minute
  • 99 percent or better accuracy promise on human work
  • Human subtitles in many languages
  • Free 45 AI minutes a month

  • AI plans start at $25.49 a seat a month
  • Free plan is English only

Who this is for

This guide is for creators and small businesses who already have a video and want accurate captions on it: Reels and TikToks, YouTube tutorials, product demos, course lessons and training clips. Our AI video editor guide compares tools for cutting and producing video, and our transcription guide compares tools for turning meetings into text. Here we judge only one job: getting correct, readable subtitles onto video and into a file platforms accept.

Captions matter beyond accessibility. In a Verizon Media and Publicis Media survey of 5,616 US adults, 69 percent said they watch video with the sound off in public, and about 80 percent of people who use captions are not deaf or hard of hearing Verizon caption survey ↗.

That makes the needs different from editing. You care about free minutes, watermarks on free exports, SRT or VTT downloads, translation, and a human fallback for videos that must be exact.

How we picked

We read each vendor's pricing and product pages and checked prices on October 12, 2026. We did not caption test videos ourselves, so we report vendor limits and claims rather than our own accuracy scores. No vendor paid for placement.

  • Subtitle minutes included, free and paid
  • Watermark and resolution limits on free exports
  • Download of SRT or VTT caption files
  • Subtitle translation and number of languages
  • A human captioning option for exact work
  • Published price for one creator or a small team

Burned in captions or caption files?

Burned in, or open, captions are part of the video image. They are what you want for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, where styled words on screen keep people watching. Kapwing, Clipchamp, CapCut and Descript all add these inside the editor Kapwing pricing ↗ Clipchamp subtitles ↗ CapCut auto captions ↗ Descript pricing ↗.

Caption files, usually SRT or VTT, sit beside the video and can be turned on or off. YouTube accepts SRT, VTT and many other formats YouTube caption formats ↗. Files are better for long videos, courses and anything that needs to be accessible, because viewers can resize them and search engines can read them. Make both when you can: burn captions into the social cut and upload a file with the long version.

Accuracy, and when captions are required

AI captions are good, not perfect. YouTube warns its automatic captions may misrepresent speech because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise, and tells creators to always review and edit them YouTube auto captions ↗. CapCut gives the same advice for names, specialist terms and timing CapCut auto captions ↗. Vendor accuracy claims, such as VEED's up to 99.9 percent, are marketing figures, and VEED itself suggests editing brand and industry terms VEED subtitles ↗.

For most private small businesses, captions are a good practice rather than a specific legal deadline. Public bodies are different: the Justice Department's ADA Title II rule requires state and local governments, including public schools and universities, to meet WCAG 2.1 AA, which includes captions, by April 24, 2026 for larger entities and April 26, 2027 for those serving under 50,000 people ADA Title II rule ↗. If you make video for a public client, budget for human captions or a careful human review.

What it costs for a typical creator

Say you publish eight 5 minute videos a month, or 40 minutes. Clipchamp captions them for free Clipchamp subtitles ↗. Happy Scribe Basic covers it at $8.50 a month billed yearly, with 120 minutes Happy Scribe pricing ↗. Kapwing Pro costs $16 a month billed yearly and leaves room for 960 more minutes plus translation Kapwing pricing ↗. Kapwing's free plan would not be enough, at 10 subtitle minutes Kapwing pricing ↗.

Human captions for the same 40 minutes would cost about $79.60 at Rev's $1.99 a minute Rev pricing ↗, or $90 at Happy Scribe's $2.25 for English Happy Scribe human subtitles ↗. Most creators should use AI and proofread, and save human captions for the videos that must be exact.

Before you sign up

Upload one real video with your usual audio, accents and product names to two free plans, and compare how many words you have to fix. Then check that the export works where you post.

  • Check the free plan for watermarks and export length limits
  • Confirm SRT or VTT download is on the plan you will buy
  • Add a custom vocabulary or fix brand names before export
  • Keep lines short and on screen long enough to read
  • Use human captions for public sector or compliance video
  • Start on monthly billing until you know your minutes

The competition

CapCutPro $19.99/month

CapCut is popular for styled captions on short videos and can translate captions into another language CapCut auto captions ↗. But its own pages disagree on cost: its caption tool page calls it free CapCut auto captions ↗, while a CapCut article says the auto caption generator is exclusive to Pro, which it lists at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, varying by region CapCut Standard vs Pro ↗. Descript, a competitor, also says CapCut moved auto captions to a paid tier in 2025 Descript on CapCut captions ↗. Check in the app before you plan around it.

DescriptHobbyist $16/month billed yearly ($24 monthly)

Descript is our top AI video editor and adds animated captions while you edit by transcript, with transcription in 23 languages Descript pricing ↗. Creator is $12 a month billed yearly with 10 transcription hours, but the free plan allows one watermark free export a month at 720p Descript pricing ↗. Pick it if you also need editing, not just subtitles.

VEEDLite $9/month, Pro $24/month (per Dupple; not shown on VEED's pricing page)

VEED's subtitle tool is free to start and claims more than 125 languages, but downloading SRT, VTT or TXT files requires a paid plan, and its page says the Creator plan starts at $20 a month VEED subtitles ↗. We could not confirm its full plan limits on the vendor's own pricing page.
