Yes. AI receptionists can now answer routine calls, take messages, book appointments and pass urgent callers to a person, though they still struggle with upset or unusual callers. For most small businesses we recommend Upfirst: it starts at $24.95 a month, books into common calendars, does warm transfers and has a 14 day free trial with no credit card.
Affordable, self serve plans with booking and human transfer are available today, and the core jobs of answering, message taking and booking work well when the setup is done carefully.Upfirst
Best for most small businesses that want calls answered and booked without a big monthly bill.
Upfirst does the core job of a receptionist on every plan, including the cheapest one. All plans include 24/7 answering, call summaries, recordings and transcripts, call transfers, appointment scheduling, texting during a call, spam blocking and a Zapier connection Upfirst pricing ↗. It can book straight into Google Calendar, Outlook, Clio, Acuity, Calendly and Square, which covers the booking tools most salons, law offices and service businesses already use Upfirst pricing ↗. It speaks more than 35 languages Upfirst pricing ↗.
Pricing is simple and fair for low call volumes. The Starter plan is $24.95 a month for 30 calls, Premium is $59.95 for 90 calls, and Pro is $159.95 for 300 calls, with 20 percent off if you pay yearly Upfirst pricing ↗. Calls under 15 seconds and calls where nobody speaks are not billed, and spam does not count toward your total Upfirst pricing ↗. There is no contract, and the 14 day free trial needs no credit card and lets you forward real calls Upfirst pricing ↗. That means you can try it on your actual phone line before you pay anything.
User reviews are positive but few. On Capterra, all 13 reviews give it five stars, and reviewers praise fast setup and helpful support; one says they had a working answering service in under 20 minutes Capterra, Upfirst ↗. The main complaints are about the voice: some reviewers say it still sounds like AI, with occasional long pauses, and one reported it interrupting callers before a fix Capterra, Upfirst ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.
Why we like it
- Calendar booking on every plan, with Google, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square and Clio
- Warm transfers to you or your team
- 14 day free trial, no credit card, real calls allowed
- Short calls and spam are not billed
- No contract, switch plans anytime
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Billed per call, so a busy line gets expensive on the lower plans
- No website chat or shared text inbox listed
- Small number of independent reviews so far
- HIPAA business associate agreements only on the Custom plan
Rosie
Best for busy phone lines that mainly need answers and messages, not live booking.
Rosie bills by minutes instead of calls, and its entry plan is generous. The Professional plan is $49 a month for 250 minutes, Scale is $149 for 1,000 minutes, and Growth is $299 for 2,000 minutes Rosie pricing ↗. If your phone rings a lot with short questions about hours, prices and directions, that allowance stretches much further than a per call plan at the same price. Every plan answers in English and Spanish, includes iOS and Android apps, and adds a free website chat widget Rosie pricing ↗. There is a 7 day free trial Rosie pricing ↗.
The tradeoff is that the cheapest plan does less. On Professional, Rosie sends callers an appointment link by text rather than booking for them, and it allows two custom message taking scenarios Rosie pricing ↗. Booking directly on your calendar, texting callers during the call, and warm and live transfers start on the Scale plan Rosie pricing ↗. Growth adds waterfall transfers, where Rosie tries several numbers until someone picks up Rosie pricing ↗.
Two gaps to know about. The pricing page asks what happens when you go over your minutes but does not give an overage rate Rosie pricing ↗. It also lists Zapier as the way to connect other apps, rather than naming built in calendar or CRM connections Rosie pricing ↗. We also found very few independent user reviews, so treat the 7 day trial as your real test.
Why we like it
- 250 minutes for $49 a month
- Free website chat widget on all plans
- English and Spanish on every call
- Mobile apps for iPhone and Android
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Direct calendar booking and live transfers need the $149 Scale plan
- Overage rate not published
- Few independent user reviews
Smith.ai
Best for businesses that cannot afford a botched call and want real people behind the AI.
Smith.ai pairs its AI receptionist with human staff: the AI can transfer a caller to a live receptionist based in North America at any time Smith.ai pricing ↗. That backup is the reason to pay more. A law office taking a new client or a clinic with a confused patient gets a person on the line instead of a dead end. The AI handles answering, recording, transcripts, summaries, lead qualification, call routing and scheduling through Calendly and other tools, with native links to Clio and Zapier Smith.ai pricing ↗.
It is priced per call and costs more than our other picks. A free plan covers 25 real calls a month, which works as a long trial Smith.ai pricing ↗. The Pro plan is $150 a month for 75 calls, and extra calls cost $2.50 each; Enterprise starts at $500 for 300 calls Smith.ai pricing ↗. Pro adds dedicated onboarding, live support and an account manager Smith.ai pricing ↗.
Smith.ai has the largest body of user reviews in this guide: 4.4 out of 5 from 374 reviews on Trustpilot Trustpilot, Smith.ai ↗. Most praise its staff and setup. The complaints matter, though. One reviewer said the AI is not their clients' favorite, another said some calls were handled very poorly, and one described paying upfront for a six month contract and being refused a refund beyond one month Trustpilot, Smith.ai ↗. Read any contract before you sign.
Why we like it
- Live human receptionists can take over calls
- Free plan with 25 calls a month
- Native Clio and Zapier connections
- Long track record and many user reviews
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Expensive per call once you pass the free tier
- Some users say callers dislike the AI voice
- Billing complaints about longer contracts
My AI Front Desk
Best for owners who want calls, texts and website chat handled in one place.
My AI Front Desk bundles more than a phone answerer. The Business-in-a-Box plan is $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly, and includes 200 voice minutes, two way texting up to 400 messages, 100 website chatbot conversations, a built in CRM and Zapier My AI Front Desk pricing ↗. Extra voice time works out to about $0.25 a minute through credits My AI Front Desk pricing ↗. There is a 7 day free trial and no contract My AI Front Desk pricing ↗.
The company says you can build the receptionist from your website in under five minutes and go live the same day My AI Front Desk features ↗. When a call needs a person, it can warm transfer the caller or send you an alert with a full transcript My AI Front Desk features ↗. It also lists connections to practice and shop tools such as SimplePractice, Jane App and Shopify, and offers HIPAA compliance with signed business associate agreements My AI Front Desk features ↗.
User feedback is mixed. On Trustpilot it scores 3.5 out of 5 from 15 reviews Trustpilot, My AI Front Desk ↗. Happy users mention easy setup and professional call handling, while unhappy ones describe inconsistent AI answers, trouble getting refunds and charges after cancelling Trustpilot, My AI Front Desk ↗. Use the trial on monthly billing before you commit to a year.
Why we like it
- Calls, two way texts and web chat in one plan
- Warm transfer or instant alert with transcript
- HIPAA compliance with signed agreements
- Quick setup from your website
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Specific calendar apps are not named on the pricing page
- Billing and refund complaints from users
- Costs more than our pick for basic call answering

Who this is for
This guide is for owners of small local businesses whose phone rings when nobody can answer it. Think of a stylist with foil in her hands, a dentist mid procedure, a plumber under a sink, or a two person law office during a court day. Every missed call is a customer who may simply call the next business on the list.
An AI receptionist answers that call. It greets the caller with your business name, answers common questions from information you give it, takes a message, books an appointment if you allow it, and sends you a summary. If the call is urgent, it can try to transfer the caller to you.
If you already have a full time front desk person, an AI receptionist can still cover nights, weekends, lunch breaks and the moments when two lines ring at once. If your business takes very few calls, a good voicemail greeting and a fast callback habit may be enough, and you can skip this purchase.
Why you should trust us
We are honest about how this guide was made. We read each vendor's pricing and feature pages, checked every price on October 9, 2026, and looked for independent user reviews on Trustpilot and Capterra. We also read a published 30 day field report from a consultant who put an AI receptionist on a small trade business's main line Bullock field report ↗. Every fact in this guide links to the page it came from.
We have not yet tested these tools hands on. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with results, including call recordings, booking accuracy and how each one handles a transfer. Until then, our picks rest on what the vendors publish, what users report and how well each plan fits a typical small business. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.
How we picked
We started with about fifteen names that come up most often in this category, including tools built for small businesses, phone systems with an AI add on, and developer platforms. We dropped tools that are built for a single industry, like car dealerships, and tools sold only as enterprise contracts or as do it yourself kits for developers, because a typical owner cannot set them up alone.
For the rest, we opened each pricing page and asked a simple question: what does a business with a few hundred calls a month actually get for its money? We weighted the criteria below. Booking and human handoff mattered most, because those are the two jobs that turn a missed call into revenue or save a bad situation. Published prices mattered too. If a vendor hides its pricing behind a sales call, it is hard for a small business to compare, so we ranked it lower.
- Easy setup that an owner can finish without a developer
- Clear, published pricing with a fair entry plan
- Books into common calendars such as Google, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity or Square
- Transfers urgent callers to a real person
- A free trial on real calls
- Call quality and reliability as reported by users
- Texts and website chat as a bonus, not a requirement
What an AI receptionist can and can't do today
The good news is that routine calls are now well handled. In a 30 day field report on a small heating repair business, an AI receptionist picked up 214 calls that would otherwise have gone to voicemail, and captured 89 bookings or callback requests with names, addresses and job details Bullock field report ↗. Twenty one of those became paid jobs Bullock field report ↗. It handled scheduling, pricing and service area questions well Bullock field report ↗.
The same report shows the limits. Forty one callers hung up within ten seconds of realizing they were not talking to a person Bullock field report ↗. Urgent and emotional calls went poorly, because callers wanted reassurance the system could not give Bullock field report ↗. Two real emergency callouts sat unanswered because the owner only checked transcripts once a week at first Bullock field report ↗. Telling callers up front that they were talking to an AI lowered the hang up rate later in the month Bullock field report ↗.
In practice, an AI receptionist is a strong first line, not a full replacement. Expect it to answer questions you have written down, take accurate messages, book into open slots and pass along urgent calls. Do not expect it to calm an angry customer, handle a complicated quote or make judgment calls. The tools that let you set a clear path to a human, like warm transfers on Upfirst Upfirst pricing ↗ or live receptionists on Smith.ai Smith.ai pricing ↗, close most of that gap.
Before you sign up
Setup is mostly writing. You give the tool your hours, services, prices, service area and the questions people ask most, then decide what it should do with each kind of call. Most tools can pull this from your website, but read what it learned and fix anything wrong. Then forward your existing number or use a new one. Upfirst and Rosie both let you forward real calls during a free trial Upfirst pricing ↗ Rosie pricing ↗.
Plan the handoff before you go live. Decide who gets transferred calls, what happens if they do not answer, and which calls count as urgent. Then check alerts every day, not every week. The field report above missed two emergencies for exactly that reason Bullock field report ↗.
Check the law on recording. These tools record and transcribe calls. Federal law allows recording with one party's consent, but the Digital Media Law Project counts eleven states that require every party's consent, including California, Florida, Pennsylvania and Washington DMLP recording law ↗. The safe habit is a short greeting that says the call is answered by an AI assistant and may be recorded. That disclosure also seemed to reduce hang ups in the field report Bullock field report ↗.
If you handle health information, as dental offices and medspas do, ask for a signed business associate agreement before you go live. Upfirst offers one only on its Custom plan Upfirst pricing ↗, and My AI Front Desk says it signs them My AI Front Desk features ↗.
- Write a one page fact sheet: hours, services, prices, location, parking, policies
- List your call types and what the AI should do with each
- Set a transfer number and a backup plan for urgent calls
- Add an AI and recording disclosure to the greeting
- Test with ten real scenarios before forwarding your main line
- Read the first week of transcripts every day
- Prefer monthly billing until you are sure
What to look forward to
Voices are getting more natural and pauses shorter, which should cut down on early hang ups. Several vendors now combine phone, text and website chat in one assistant, so a caller who hangs up can get a text with a booking link instead of nothing My AI Front Desk pricing ↗ Rosie pricing ↗.
Deeper connections to the software you already run are coming next. Some tools already book straight into job management or practice software, such as ServiceTitan for home services Sameday pricing ↗. We expect more tools to read and write customer records directly, which would let an AI receptionist reschedule an existing client or check a job status. We will update this guide as tools add these features and as our hands on testing finishes.
The competition
DialzaraStarts at $29/month for 60 minutes
Dialzara has the lowest entry price we found at $29 a month for 60 minutes, with booking, CRM and calendar links, and it adds AI texting free and 100 website chat sessions a month free with a voice plan Dialzara pricing ↗. Sixty minutes runs out fast, overage is $0.48 a minute, and the pricing page lists call routing without clearly describing live transfers Dialzara pricing ↗.
GoodcallStarts at $79/month for 100 unique callers
Goodcall bills by unique callers instead of minutes, starting at $79 a month for 100 callers, and lets you build and hear a demo agent for free Goodcall pricing ↗. Its pricing page does not mention texting or name calendar integrations, so it is harder to judge for booking heavy businesses Goodcall pricing ↗.
RubyStarts at $250/month for 50 minutes
Ruby is a well known live receptionist service with real people, Spanish coverage and HIPAA compliant options, plus optional AI features at no extra cost Ruby pricing ↗. It is not an AI receptionist at heart, and plans start at $250 a month for just 50 minutes Ruby pricing ↗.
Quo (OpenPhone)Starts at $19/user/month ($15 billed yearly)
Quo, a business phone system whose pricing page also shows the same plans under the OpenPhone name, includes an AI agent called Sona on every plan, starting at $19 per user a month Quo pricing ↗. Only 10 Sona calls a month are included before credits kick in, and the pricing page does not say whether Sona books appointments Quo pricing ↗. It makes sense if you want a new business phone system anyway.
SamedayStarts at $449/month for 500 minutes
Sameday is built for home service companies like HVAC, plumbing and roofing, and includes scheduling with ServiceTitan Sameday pricing ↗. At $449 a month for 500 minutes, with no free trial mentioned, it is more than most small shops need Sameday pricing ↗.
