Yes, an AI search engine can now replace many everyday Google searches, as long as you click the sources on anything important. For most people we recommend Perplexity: it is built around search, its free plan puts citations in every answer, and it had the lowest citation error rate of eight AI search tools in a 2025 Columbia University study. If you already use ChatGPT, its free plan also searches the web and links its sources.
AI search with citations is free and in daily use today, but independent testing found these tools often cite the wrong page or invent links, so treat every answer as a lead to check, not a final fact.Perplexity: our pick
Best for search first answers with a citation on every claim.
Perplexity is a search engine first and a chatbot second. Its free plan is described as search only, with citations in every answer and access to basic AI models Perplexity pricing ↗. That makes it the most natural switch from Google: you ask, it searches, and each sentence links to the page it came from.
It also did best in the most cited independent test of AI search. In a March 2025 study by Columbia University's Tow Center, eight AI search tools were given quotes from news articles and asked to name the source; together they failed more than 60 percent of the time, and Perplexity had the lowest failure rate at 37 percent Tow Center study ↗. That is better than its rivals, not good enough to skip checking.
The free plan includes 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 research query a month, with limited file uploads and no advanced models Perplexity plans ↗. Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly Perplexity pricing ↗, or $20 month to month according to an independent review Asian Efficiency review ↗. On privacy, Perplexity says some data from Free, Pro and Max users may be used to train its models unless you turn off the AI data setting in your account preferences Perplexity data ↗. Incognito searches are never stored Perplexity settings ↗.
Why we like Perplexity
- Citations in every answer, even on free
- Lowest citation error rate in the Tow Center study
- Incognito mode that stores no searches
- Pro is $17 a month billed yearly
Where Perplexity falls short
- Only 3 Pro Searches a day on free
- Trains on your searches unless you opt out
- Still wrong about a third of the time in testing
ChatGPT: best free option
Best for people who want search inside the AI app they already use, for free.
ChatGPT searches the web on every plan, including Free, and even for people who are not signed in ChatGPT search ↗ ChatGPT pricing ↗. It searches automatically when a question needs current information, or you can start a search from the tools menu, and answers that use the web may include citations you can click ChatGPT search ↗. OpenAI itself warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect ChatGPT search ↗.
The free plan is generous: unlimited everyday text chats, plus web search, file uploads and image creation with separate limits ChatGPT free tier ↗. Ads may appear on the free tier in certain countries ChatGPT free tier ↗. Go costs $8 a month in the US and OpenAI says Plus at $20 a month stays ad free ChatGPT Go ↗ ChatGPT Plus ↗.
For privacy, OpenAI says ChatGPT does not share your IP address or account details with its search partners ChatGPT search ↗. You can stop your chats being used for training by turning off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls, and temporary chats are kept up to 30 days and not used for training ChatGPT data controls ↗.
Why we like ChatGPT
- Web search free, even signed out
- Unlimited everyday chats on free
- Searches automatically for current questions
- Training opt out in settings
Where ChatGPT falls short
- Citations appear only on some answers
- Ads may appear on the free tier
- Search counts toward plan limits
Claude: best for checking sources
Best for research questions where you want the quote behind each claim and no ads.
Claude includes web search on every plan, including Free Claude pricing ↗. Anthropic's help center says every response that uses search includes citations, with direct links and relevant quotes when appropriate, so you can see the exact passage a claim rests on Claude web search ↗. That quote is the fastest way to catch an AI that cited a real page for something the page does not say.
On the newest version of the app there is no search toggle; Claude searches when it decides it helps Claude web search ↗. On free accounts, searches and page fetches count toward usage limits that reset every five hours Claude web search ↗. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly Claude pricing ↗.
It is less of a search engine than Perplexity. There is no dedicated search home page, and because Claude decides when a search helps Claude web search ↗, a quick factual question may be answered without fresh sources unless you ask it to search.
Why we like Claude
- Web search on the free plan
- Citations with quotes from the source
- Searches on its own when a question needs it
- Pro $17 a month billed yearly
Where Claude falls short
- Searches count toward a 5 hour usage limit
- May not search unless asked or needed
- No dedicated search home page

Who this is for
This guide is for anyone who is tired of scrolling past ads and ten blue links and wants a direct answer with sources they can check. Typical uses: comparing products before buying, checking what changed in a rule or a price this month, getting a quick summary of a news story, or researching a topic with links to read later.
It answers a different question from our best AI chatbot and best free AI chatbot guides. Those judge writing, images, voice and all round help. Here we only care about search: whether each answer shows where it came from, whether the sources are real and current, how much you get free, and what happens to your searches. That is why Perplexity, which we placed behind the general chatbots in those guides, is our first pick here.
Why you should trust us
We read each service's plans page, search help article and privacy documentation in October 2026, and leaned on the Tow Center's independent citation study rather than vendor accuracy claims Tow Center study ↗. Every fact links to its source. No company paid for placement.
How we picked
We considered every chatbot and AI search tool in our catalog and kept only those that actually search the live web and show sources. That excluded Duck.ai's chat, whose help page does not say it searches the web Duck.ai help ↗, although DuckDuckGo's separate Search Assist answers do cite sources DuckDuckGo Search Assist ↗.
Then we ranked on the criteria below. Citation quality came first, because an answer with a wrong or invented link is worse than no answer: in the Tow Center study, Gemini and Grok 3 produced more fabricated links than correct ones Tow Center study ↗.
- Citations on every answer, ideally with the quoted passage
- Independent evidence on citation accuracy
- Searches the live web for current events
- Useful free tier with clear limits
- Privacy controls: training opt out, incognito or temporary chats
- No ads, or ads clearly separated
How to check an AI search answer
Click at least one source for any fact you will act on. Check that the page exists, that it says what the answer claims, and that it is current. OpenAI's own help page warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect ChatGPT search ↗, and Google says AI Mode does not always get it right and suggests checking important information in more than one place Google AI Mode ↗.
Watch for answers with no sources at all. ChatGPT includes citations only on answers that used search ChatGPT search ↗, and Gemini shows a Sources button only when it provided links Gemini sources ↗. If there is no source, ask the tool to search and cite.
For money, health or legal questions, use the AI answer to find the official page, then read the official page.
What happens to your searches
Perplexity may use Free, Pro and Max users' data for training unless you opt out, and the opt out applies only to data collected afterward Perplexity data ↗. ChatGPT has a similar toggle, and its temporary chats are kept up to 30 days ChatGPT data controls ↗. Google says a subset of Gemini chats are reviewed by people and kept up to three years, and chats with Keep Activity off are kept for 72 hours Gemini privacy ↗.
DuckDuckGo says its AI features do not track you, store your prompts or train on your data Duck.ai help ↗. If privacy matters more than depth, its Search Assist answers, which link one or two sources, are the most private option we found DuckDuckGo Search Assist ↗.
What to look forward to
Google is pushing AI Mode in its own search, with follow up questions and links, and falls back to plain web links when its confidence is low Google AI Mode ↗. We expect citation accuracy to become the main way these tools compete, and we would like more independent tests like the Tow Center's to be repeated each year.
The competition
Google GeminiFree; Google AI Plus from $4.99/month
Google says Gemini relies on external sources such as Google Search to generate responses Gemini overview ↗, and shows a Sources button when it links pages Gemini sources ↗. In the Tow Center study, though, Gemini was one of two tools whose fabricated links outnumbered correct ones Tow Center study ↗.
GrokFree; SuperGrok $30/month
Grok 3 Search had the highest failure rate in the Tow Center study, 94 percent, and sent users to error pages 154 times, scoring worse than the free Grok 2 Tow Center study ↗. We would not use it as a search engine.
Duck.aiFree
Duck.ai is free and private: DuckDuckGo says it does not store prompts or train on your data Duck.ai help ↗. Its help page does not say the chat searches the web, but DuckDuckGo's Search Assist answers in regular search always link one or two sources, and you can set how often they appear DuckDuckGo Search Assist ↗.
Microsoft 365 Copilot ChatFree with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription
