Devin Desktop, the AI code editor formerly called Windsurf, has the most generous free plan we have seen: unlimited Tab completions and inline edits plus a light agent quota. It is the best place to start if you want an AI editor without paying, and Pro at $20 a month adds frontier models and Cognition's cloud agent.
What Devin Desktop is
Devin Desktop is an AI code editor from Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent. It used to be called Windsurf. Cognition acquired Windsurf and renamed it Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026, pushing the update to existing installs with no reinstall needed Carly analysis ↗. Accounts, plans, extensions, keybindings and MCP connections carried over Carly analysis ↗.
The app now opens to an Agent Command Center, a board for managing local and cloud agents, with the full editor behind it Carly analysis ↗. Windsurf's built in agent, Cascade, reached end of life on July 1, 2026 and was replaced by Devin Local, which can spawn subagents for parallel work Carly analysis ↗. You can hand tasks between Devin Desktop on your machine and Devin Cloud, which runs in its own cloud sandbox Carly analysis ↗.
Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this review with our results.
What it does well
The free plan is the standout. It includes unlimited Tab completions, unlimited inline edits, a light quota for coding with agents and limited model availability Devin pricing ↗. Unlimited completions for free is more generous than GitHub Copilot Free, which caps you at 2,000 completions a month Copilot plans ↗.
Pro widens the model menu. For $20 a month you get higher quotas and frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI, plus leading open source models Devin pricing ↗. Pro also unlocks Devin Cloud, so you can send longer tasks to a cloud agent while you keep working locally Devin pricing ↗.
It is open to other agents. One analysis of the rebrand reports that Devin Desktop supports the Agent Client Protocol, so outside agents such as Codex, Claude Agent and Gemini CLI can run inside the editor Carly analysis ↗. Anthropic also lists Devin Desktop among the editors where Claude Code works Claude Code ↗.
Usage resets often. Paid allowances refresh automatically on a daily and weekly basis, so one heavy day does not burn a whole month Devin pricing ↗.
Where it falls short
The rebrand means churn. The name, the default view and the built in agent all changed in the space of a month Carly analysis ↗. Tutorials and forum answers that mention Windsurf or Cascade may no longer match what you see. Scripts or CI jobs that call Cascade had to be moved to Devin Local Carly analysis ↗.
The free agent quota is small. The free plan offers only a light agent quota and limited model choice Devin pricing ↗. If you want an AI to do multi step work across your project every day, you will run into limits.
Quotas are vague. Cognition does not publish exact quota figures for any plan, and the cost of each message depends on the model, the size of the task and how much reasoning it needs Devin pricing ↗. Extra usage on paid plans is billed at API prices Devin pricing ↗, so heavy use can cost more than the sticker price.
