AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace software developers?
Not the whole job. AI coding agents already write tests, update documentation and draft whole pull requests, but every major tool says a person must review the code before it ships, and a 2025 study found experienced developers were slower with AI on their own projects. BLS still projects 10 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, though jobs for the youngest developers have dropped.

| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write automated tests for existing code | AI does this today | Claude Code, GitHub Copilot | Coding agents write test suites, run them and fix failures on request, and you review the result before merging. [5][3] |
| Write and update code documentation and release notes | AI does this today | GitHub Copilot, Claude Code | Agents create or update documentation and draft release notes from the changes, which you skim and approve. [3][5] |
| Handle routine upkeep such as dependency upgrades, lint fixes and merge conflicts | AI does this today | Claude Code, GitHub Copilot | This chore work is exactly what agents advertise, and they open a pull request for you to check. [5][3] |
| Build new features from a written description | AI helps, you check | Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor | Agents plan the change and write code across many files, but 45 percent of developers say AI answers are often almost right, so you test and fix them. [5][6][7] |
| Fix bugs and correct errors | AI helps, you check | Claude Code, OpenAI Codex | Agents trace an error to its cause and propose a fix, yet a 2025 trial found experienced developers took 19 percent longer with AI on their own projects. [5][6][8] |
| Review other people's code | AI helps, you check | GitHub Copilot | Copilot leaves review comments and suggested changes, but its review never counts as an approval or blocks a merge. [4] |
| Learn how an unfamiliar codebase works | AI helps, you check | OpenAI Codex, Claude Code | You can ask an agent questions about the codebase and get answers fast, but you still have to confirm they are right. [6][5] |
| Check logs and failed builds to keep systems running | AI helps, you check | Claude Code | Agents can scan logs for anomalies and analyze failed builds overnight, while a person decides what to fix. [5] |
| Check code for security problems | AI helps, you check | Claude Code, GitHub Copilot | Agents can review changed files for security issues and make targeted security fixes, but they may miss problems in large or complex changes. [5][3] |
| Take responsibility for the code that ships | Still human | None | Vendors say you must review and test all agent code before merging, and you are responsible for it. [3][6] |
| Work out what users need and whether it fits the time and budget | Still human | None | Turning a vague request into the right plan takes conversations, tradeoffs and business judgment. |
| Design the overall system and set performance standards | Still human | None | Choosing the architecture and deciding how fast and reliable it must be are decisions someone has to own. |
| Talk with customers, managers and other teams about technical issues | Still human | None | When AI answers fall short, 75 percent of developers still turn to another person for help. [7] |
| Approve and coordinate releasing software to users | Still human | None | Even workflows started by Copilot's agent need approval from a person with write access before they run. [3] |
| Lead and assign work to other developers | Still human | None | Deciding who works on what, mentoring juniors and now supervising AI agents is management work. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace software developers?
Not according to current projections. BLS expects software developer, QA analyst and tester jobs to grow 10 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 106,100 openings a year, partly because of demand for AI software itself [1]. AI agents do take over chores like tests and documentation, but vendors say a person must review their code [3] [6].
Is AI making it harder to get an entry level developer job?
It looks that way. Stanford researchers describe a steep fall in employment for young software developers, with the drop for the youngest workers in the most AI exposed jobs reaching about 16 percent by October 2025 [9]. They say several factors are involved, not AI alone [9].
Do AI coding tools actually make developers faster?
Not always. In a 2025 randomized trial, 16 experienced open source developers took 19 percent longer on tasks when allowed to use AI, even though they expected it to speed them up [8]. In the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, 80 percent of developers used AI tools but only 29 percent trusted their accuracy [7].
Which developer tasks are safest from AI?
Working out what users need, designing systems and owning what ships. GitHub says you are responsible for reviewing everything its agent produces, and its workflows need a person's approval to run [3]. Most developers still turn to a colleague when AI answers fall short [7].
