How to switch without losing your books
Pick a clean cut off date, ideally the first day of a month, quarter or fiscal year. Run a trial balance, open invoices and open bills report in QuickBooks for that date, and export your chart of accounts, customer, vendor and item lists. Decide how much history to bring. Keep read only access to QuickBooks for older records, and do not cancel until your accountant has signed off on the opening balances.
Payroll needs extra care. Xero says payroll data does not migrate Xero conversion ↗, so time a payroll switch for the start of a quarter or year, when tax filings are simplest, and reconnect your bank feeds last.
