Tidio

Best for most small businesses that want an AI chatbot plus live chat in one easy widget.

Tidio combines a website chat widget, a shared inbox and an AI agent called Lyro. Lyro builds its knowledge from your existing support content, and you can add more material over time Tidio Lyro ↗. When a visitor needs urgent help or asks something Lyro does not know, it alerts your team, and it learns from the answer your staff give Tidio Lyro ↗. It can also handle tasks like order updates, lead qualification and routing questions to the right person Tidio Lyro ↗. Tidio says its customers average a 75 percent resolution rate with Lyro; that is the company's own figure Tidio Lyro ↗.

Pricing is split into parts, so read it carefully. The Starter plan is $24.17 a month for 100 conversations and 10 seats, and Growth starts at $49.17 a month Tidio pricing ↗. Lyro is priced on top, starting at $32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations, with limits you can raise up to 1,000 a month Tidio pricing ↗. Every account gets 50 Lyro conversations free for life, and there is a 7 day free trial of everything with no credit card Tidio pricing ↗. The inbox also handles Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email Tidio pricing ↗.

Tidio is popular with small businesses: it scores 4.7 out of 5 from 590 reviews on Capterra, with praise for quick, no code setup and the combined inbox Capterra Tidio ↗. Complaints focus on price increases, including one reviewer whose bill doubled after a December 2024 pricing change, plus slow widget loading and delayed notifications for some users Capterra Tidio ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • AI agent, live chat and inbox in one tool
  • Learns from your support content and from staff answers
  • Free plan and 7 day trial with no card
  • Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email in the same inbox

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Users report price increases
  • Some advanced features need higher tiers
Budget pickStarts at $40/month for 700 message credits

Chatbase

Best for owners who want a pure AI bot trained on their content, with more messages for the money.

Chatbase focuses on the AI agent itself. You connect your data sources, describe the agent's role and set guardrails, such as sending refund requests to a person Chatbase ↗. Sample actions on its site include checking booking slots, looking up products and finding order details Chatbase ↗. It can run on your website and also on Meta apps, Slack, WhatsApp, email and voice Chatbase ↗. Chatbase says more than 10,000 businesses use it Chatbase ↗.

The Hobby plan is $40 a month for 700 message credits, two team members, advanced AI models, integrations and basic analytics, with a 7 day trial Chatbase pricing ↗. Standard, at $150 a month for 4,000 credits, adds a help desk, API access, outbound campaigns and AI actions Chatbase pricing ↗. If you run out, extra credits cost $40 per 1,000, and removing the Powered by Chatbase label costs $99 a month Chatbase pricing ↗.

On Trustpilot it scores 4.0 out of 5 from 68 reviews, but 28 percent of reviews are one star Trustpilot Chatbase ↗. Fans praise the support team and the ease of setup; critics describe billing problems, including one reviewer who said they were charged after asking to close their account Trustpilot Chatbase ↗. Use monthly billing at first.

Why we like it

  • 700 message credits for $40 a month
  • Runs on website, WhatsApp, Slack and more
  • Guardrails and human escalation
  • 7 day trial

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Branding removal costs $99 a month
  • Help desk and AI actions need the $150 plan
  • Billing complaints on Trustpilot
Best free optionFree: 50 conversations/month, 10 seats, 50 lifetime Lyro AI conversations

Tidio

Best for small sites that get a few chats a week.

Tidio's free plan is free forever and includes 50 billable conversations a month, 10 seats, the shared inbox and the first 50 Lyro AI conversations for life Tidio pricing ↗. That is enough to test an AI chatbot on real visitors before you pay anything. Once the 50 free AI conversations are used, the chatbot can still collect messages for your team, and you can add Lyro when you are ready Tidio pricing ↗.

Other free plans are weaker for AI. Chatbase's free plan gives 50 message credits a month and one agent, includes no AI actions, and deletes agents after 14 days of inactivity Chatbase pricing ↗. Crisp's free plan includes chat for two agents but no AI credits Crisp pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • Free forever with 50 conversations a month
  • 50 lifetime AI conversations included
  • 10 seats

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Upgrade pickStarts at $0.99 per outcome, 50 outcome monthly minimum

Fin by Intercom

Best for busy businesses that want the strongest AI agent and only pay when it resolves a question.

Fin, from Intercom, is priced on results. You pay $0.99 per outcome, such as a conversation where the customer asks for no more help after Fin's last answer, with a minimum of 50 outcomes a month Fin pricing ↗. If Fin hands a conversation to your team without an outcome, you are not charged Fin pricing ↗. Qualified leads cost more, at $9.99 each Fin pricing ↗. Fin works on the web chat, email, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Slack and voice Fin pricing ↗.

You can run Fin with Intercom's help desk, from $29 per seat per month, or on top of a help desk you already use, including Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk, Salesforce, Zoho and Gorgias Fin pricing ↗ Intercom pricing ↗. There is a 14 day free trial with unlimited outcomes and no credit card Fin pricing ↗.

The 50 outcome minimum means about $50 a month at the least, and costs rise with success, so a busy site could pay hundreds a month. That is fair if each answered question saves staff time, but set a budget alert before you launch.

Why we like it

  • Pay per resolved conversation, not per message
  • Works with many existing help desks
  • 14 day trial with unlimited outcomes
  • Wide channel support, including voice

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • 50 outcome monthly minimum
  • Costs grow as volume grows
  • Qualified leads cost $9.99 each
Also greatStarts at $45/month

  • 14 day trial of any plan
  • Shared inbox and mobile apps on every plan

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Who this is for

This guide is for owners whose website gets questions: hours, prices, services, availability, order status, insurance, parking. If your staff answer the same questions every day by phone, email or chat, an AI chatbot can take most of them, at night and on weekends too.

If your site gets only a handful of visitors a day, a free plan is plenty Tidio pricing ↗. If you mainly need phone calls answered, see our guide to AI receptionists instead. And if you run a large support team, look at Fin with your existing help desk Fin pricing ↗.

Why you should trust us

We read each vendor's pricing, product and help pages, all checked on October 9, 2026. We read user reviews on Capterra and Trustpilot to understand what goes wrong after signup, and we read legal analysis of a real case where a company was held responsible for its chatbot's answer. Every fact links to its source.

We have not yet installed these chatbots on a live site for testing. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with results. Vendor claims, like resolution rates, are labeled as claims. No vendor paid to be included.

How we picked

We looked at chatbots built for small businesses and at the AI agents bigger support teams use. We favored tools that answer only from your content, hand off cleanly to a person and publish their prices.

Our criteria:

  • Learns from your website, FAQs and documents
  • Clear handoff to a person, with alerts
  • Guardrails so the bot does not invent policies
  • Captures leads or takes simple actions like booking or order lookup
  • Published pricing that a small business can predict
  • A free plan or trial
  • No code setup on common site builders

What an AI website chatbot can and can't do today

Modern AI chatbots are good at answering questions from your own material. Instead of rigid scripts, they read your pages and help articles and reply in natural language Tidio Lyro ↗ Chatbase ↗. Many can also act: Tidio lists order updates and lead qualification, and Chatbase shows booking slot lookups and order checks Tidio Lyro ↗ Chatbase ↗. Several now work beyond the website, on WhatsApp, Instagram and email Tidio pricing ↗ Chatbase ↗ Fin pricing ↗.

They still make mistakes, and you are responsible for them. In 2024 a Canadian tribunal held Air Canada liable after its website chatbot gave a customer wrong information about a bereavement fare, rejecting the argument that the chatbot was responsible for its own actions ABA on Air Canada ↗. The tribunal also said customers should not have to cross check the chatbot against other pages ABA on Air Canada ↗. Keep your content current, set guardrails, and send anything about money, refunds, health or legal matters to a person, as Chatbase's sample guardrails suggest Chatbase ↗.

Resolution rates vary. Tidio says its customers average 75 percent with Lyro, and Fin only charges when a conversation is resolved or handed off through a set procedure Tidio Lyro ↗ Fin pricing ↗. Expect lower numbers in the first weeks while you fill gaps in your content.

Before you sign up

Gather your content first. Write down your 20 most common questions with clear answers, and make sure your website states hours, prices, policies and service areas plainly. The bot can only be as good as what it reads.

Then launch quietly. Turn the bot on for a week, read every conversation, and fix the answers it gets wrong before you promote it.

Finally, decide who owns the bot. Someone on your team should read flagged conversations each week, update answers when prices or hours change, and check the monthly bill against your plan's limits. A chatbot that nobody maintains slowly drifts out of date, and outdated answers are where most chatbot mistakes come from.

  • Check whether you pay per conversation, per message credit or per resolution
  • Set guardrails for refunds, pricing exceptions, medical and legal questions
  • Make sure handoffs reach a person quickly, with phone or email alerts
  • Add a short note that visitors are chatting with an AI assistant
  • Do not let the bot collect sensitive data like card numbers or health details
  • Review transcripts weekly and update your content

What to look forward to

Website chatbots are becoming AI agents that take actions, not just answer. Tidio mentions MCP support, a standard way for AI to connect to other software, and Chatbase and Fin already handle bookings, orders and lead qualification Tidio Lyro ↗ Chatbase ↗ Fin pricing ↗. Voice is next: Fin and Chatbase both list voice channels Fin pricing ↗ Chatbase ↗.

Pricing is also shifting toward outcomes, as Fin's per resolution model shows Fin pricing ↗. That aligns the vendor's incentives with yours. We will update this guide as these features mature and our testing finishes.

The competition

IntercomStarts at $29/seat/month plus Fin outcomes

Intercom's full help desk starts at $29 per seat per month plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome Intercom pricing ↗. It is excellent for support teams, but most small businesses only need Fin or a simpler tool.

HubSpotFree; Service Hub Starter from $20/seat/month

HubSpot's free tools include rule based chatflows that can qualify leads and book meetings, according to an independent pricing analysis eesel on HubSpot ↗. Its AI agent features sit in paid tiers whose prices we could not confirm on a vendor page, so we left it out for now.
