The Best Robot Lawn Mower for Hills

On a hilly yard, the spec that matters most is the one most shoppers skip: the rated maximum slope. Two wheel drive mowers that look fine on a flat lawn slip, stall or leave strips on a bank. Here are the all wheel drive mowers we would shortlist, and how to read their slope numbers.

THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes, a robot mower can handle a steep yard if it has all wheel drive and a slope rating above your steepest grade. Our pick is the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 2500, rated for 80 percent (38.7 degree) slopes and named best for steep slopes in Bob Vila's yard test, listed on sale for $1,699.99 at Dreame's store, though it showed sold out in mid October. For lawns up to an acre, the Segway Navimow X430 has the highest rating we found, 84 percent (40 degrees), for $2,499.

All wheel drive robot mowers are sold by major brands and retailers and have been tested on real sloped yards, but slope ratings are maker figures measured under good conditions, so wet grass and soft soil still reduce what they can climb.

Who this is for

This guide is for yards with real grade: sloped front lawns, banks down to a street or creek, terraced back gardens and hillside lots. If your lawn is mostly flat, our main robot lawn mower guide covers cheaper and simpler options.

Hills change the shopping list. Drive matters most: two and three wheel designs that do fine on a flat lawn can lose grip on a bank, which is why Bob Vila saw the two wheel drive Worx WR320 struggle for traction and the Sunseeker S4's small front wheels struggle on steeper sections Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗. Slopes also often come with trees and walls that block satellite signal, so navigation matters more than on an open lawn. And a heavier mower is harder to carry back up a hill if it gets stuck.

Why you should trust us

We have not mowed with these machines ourselves. We compared maker spec sheets for slope, drive and navigation, and leaned on reviewers who mowed real sloped yards: Bob Vila's July 2026 test of seven wire free mowers on a property with sloped side lawns, and TechRadar's long term review of the LUBA 3 AWD Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗ TechRadar LUBA 3 AWD review ↗. Where two official pages disagree, we say so.

We checked prices on each maker's US store in October 2026. Some brands pay us a commission, but that never decides our picks.

How we picked

We started with every all wheel drive mower in our catalog and compared them with two wheel and rear wheel drive models. We ranked first on rated maximum slope from the maker's spec sheet, in percent and degrees, then on what testers saw on real slopes, then on navigation that holds up under trees, then on lawn size and price.

  • Rated maximum slope of at least 80 percent (about 38.7 degrees) for our top picks
  • All wheel drive, ideally with suspension or off road tires
  • Independent reports of traction on steep ground
  • Wire free navigation that does not depend on satellites alone
  • Obstacle crossing height for roots and edging
  • Price, warranty and any subscription after the first years

How to read and measure slope ratings

Percent and degrees are not the same scale. Slope percent is rise divided by run, times 100, so a bank that rises 1 foot over 2 feet of ground is a 50 percent slope, about 26.6 degrees. A 100 percent slope is 45 degrees. That is why an 80 percent rating works out to about 38.7 degrees and 84 percent to 40 degrees, as Dreame and Segway list Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ Navimow X430 ↗.

To measure your own yard, lay a straight board on the steepest part of the slope, level it, and measure the gap from its low end to the ground. Divide that gap by the board's length and multiply by 100. Measure the steepest section, not the average, and leave margin below the rating, because wet grass and soft soil reduce grip.

Check the edges too. Some makers rate a lower slope at the boundary than in the open lawn: Segway lists the two wheel drive i105 at 30 percent in the mowing area but only 10 percent at the boundary Navimow i Series specs ↗. If your slope runs right to a fence, a street or water, ask the maker for its boundary slope figure.

Before you buy

Plan the charging station on flat, level ground near power, and put no go zones around drop offs, retaining walls and ponds. Weight matters on a hill: the Dreame A3 AWD Pro and X430 weigh about 53 and 64 pounds, while the LUBA mini 2 AWD is about 39 pounds Smart Home Compared, Dreame A3 ↗ Smart Home Compared, X430 ↗ Smart Home Compared, LUBA mini 2 ↗.

Ask about running costs. Several hill capable mowers bundle cellular service for a few years and then charge for it, such as Segway's Connect+ at $32.90 a year after the free period Navimow X430 ↗.

  • Measure your steepest grade and keep a margin below the rating
  • Check the boundary slope figure if your slope meets an edge
  • Look for all wheel drive and suspension or off road tires
  • Prefer LiDAR or LiDAR plus RTK under trees
  • Check weight, since you may carry it uphill
  • Confirm warranty and cellular renewal terms

What to look forward to

Slope ratings have climbed fast. Segway now rates its X4 series at 84 percent, and Dreame, MOVA and Mammotion all list 80 percent for their all wheel drive models Navimow X430 ↗ Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD ↗ Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗. Expect more mowers to pair LiDAR with RTK and cameras, as Mammotion's Tri Fusion does, so hillside yards under trees stop being a weak spot Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗.

We will update this guide as new all wheel drive models reach US stores and as more testers publish real slope results.

The competition

MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWDAround $2,399 on sale ($2,999 list, checked Oct 2026)

The MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD is rated for 80 percent (38.6 degree) slopes with four 116 W hub motors and independent suspension, and was on sale for $2,399 on MOVA's store MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD ↗. Bob Vila says it is nearly identical to our Dreame pick, since the brands share a parent company, so buy whichever is cheaper for your lawn size Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗.

Segway Navimow i210 AWDAround $1,050 (checked Oct 2026)

The Segway Navimow i210 AWD is the cheapest all wheel drive option here at $1,049 on Segway's store, but its 45 percent (24 degree) rating suits moderate banks, not steep hills Navimow US store ↗ Abt, Navimow i210 AWD ↗. Smart Home Compared says its third driven wheel engages when it needs traction Smart Home Compared, i210 AWD ↗.

Airseekers Tron SE$1,099 (checked Oct 2026)

The Airseekers Tron SE is Bob Vila's best value pick and is rated for 65 percent (33 degree) slopes Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗. That covers many yards, but it sits well below our 80 percent picks.

Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PROAround $2,125 (checked Oct 2026)

The Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO navigates well under trees, but it is rear wheel drive and rated for 50 percent slopes, and Smart Home Compared warns ruts and soft ground can be a bigger problem than the grade Smart Home Compared, GOAT A3000 ↗.

Sunseeker S4$1,599 list; often $1,000 to $1,400 at retailers (checked Oct 2026)

The Sunseeker S4 is rated for 42 percent (22 degree) slopes, and Bob Vila found its small front wheels struggled on the steeper sections of its test yard Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗.

Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR320Around $1,250 (checked Oct 2026)

The Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR320 is two wheel drive and rated for 30 percent (17 degree) slopes Smart Home Compared, Worx WR320 ↗. Bob Vila saw it struggle for traction in thick grass and pointed hilly yards to all wheel drive models Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗.

Segway Navimow i105$799 (checked Oct 2026)

The Segway Navimow i105 is rear wheel drive, rated for 30 percent slopes and only 10 percent at the boundary, so it is for flat, small lawns Navimow i Series specs ↗.

Questions people ask

What is the best robot lawn mower for steep hills?

The Dreame A3 AWD Pro 2500 is our pick: Bob Vila named it best for steep slopes, and Dreame rates it for 80 percent (38.7 degree) grades Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗ Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗. For larger lawns, the Segway Navimow X430 has the highest rating we found, 84 percent (40 degrees), and covers up to an acre Navimow X430 ↗.

What slope can a robot mower handle?

Depending on the model, from about 30 percent to 84 percent. Two wheel drive models like the Worx WR320 are rated for 30 percent, while all wheel drive models from Dreame, MOVA and Mammotion list 80 percent and the Segway X430 lists 84 percent Smart Home Compared, Worx WR320 ↗ Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD ↗ Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗ Navimow X430 ↗. Treat the rating as a best case on dry grass.

What does an 80 percent slope mean in degrees?

About 38.7 degrees. Slope percent is rise over run times 100, so 80 percent means 8 feet of rise over 10 feet of ground. Dreame lists 80 percent as 38.7 degrees and Mammotion as 38.6 degrees, a rounding difference Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗. A 100 percent slope is 45 degrees.

Do I need all wheel drive for a hilly yard?

For anything steeper than about 45 percent, yes. Every model we found rated at 80 percent or more is all wheel drive, while the two wheel drive Worx WR320 is rated for 30 percent and the rear wheel drive Ecovacs GOAT A3000 for 50 percent Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗ Navimow X430 ↗ Smart Home Compared, Worx WR320 ↗ Smart Home Compared, GOAT A3000 ↗. Bob Vila saw the two wheel drive Worx lose traction in thick grass Bob Vila best robotic mowers ↗.

Are wire free robot mowers good on slopes under trees?

Yes, if they do not rely on satellites alone. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro and LUBA mini 2 AWD navigate with LiDAR and cameras, and the LUBA 3 AWD adds RTK to LiDAR and vision Dreame A3 AWD Pro ↗ Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD ↗ Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD ↗. Mowers that rely mainly on network RTK, like the Segway X430, use vision as backup Navimow X430 ↗.

Can a robot mower mow wet slopes?

It is best avoided. Slope ratings assume good grip, and TechRadar found the LUBA 3 AWD's front tires could tear grass in soft, shady areas when turning TechRadar LUBA 3 AWD review ↗. Schedule hill zones for dry parts of the day and use rain delay settings where the mower has them.
