THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes, a wire free robot mower can now keep most lawns trimmed with little help, though it maintains grass rather than rescuing an overgrown yard. For most lawns up to an acre we recommend the Segway Navimow X430: Bob Vila named it best overall after yard testing, it is rated for slopes up to 84 percent, and it maps without a boundary wire. It lists at $2,499.

Wire free robot mowers are sold by major US retailers and have been through independent yard tests, though setup quality and signal coverage still vary by yard.

Segway Navimow X430

Best for most lawns up to an acre, including hilly and awkward yards.

Bob Vila tested seven wire free mowers and named the Segway Navimow X430 best overall Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. Its testers said it handled thick St. Augustine grass and steep side yards well, had the easiest mapping of the group, and kept a strong signal even without its RTK antenna installed Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. If you make a mistake while mapping, it backs up along the route instead of making you start over Bob Vila robot mowers ↗.

Segway lists the X430 for yards up to 1 acre at $2,499 Navimow store ↗. It has all wheel drive, a slope rating of 84 percent, and can cross obstacles about 2.8 inches high SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. It navigates by network RTK over built in 4G, with 360 degree vision as a backup, and needs no perimeter wire SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. The 17 inch twin disc deck cuts from 0.75 to 4 inches, set in the app, and the mower has rain, lift and tilt sensors, pet and child detection, GPS tracking and a PIN lock SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. It has a swappable battery that runs about 110 minutes and a 3 year warranty SHC, Navimow X430 ↗.

It has tradeoffs. Bob Vila found it large and heavy to move by hand Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. Its vision system treats tall weeds as obstacles, a full acre takes several charges, the network RTK service becomes a paid subscription after the first year, and it leaves a strip near trees for a string trimmer SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. It was unavailable on Amazon US when we checked, so buy from Segway or another retailer SHC, Navimow X430 ↗ Navimow store ↗. We have not tested it ourselves; hands on testing is in progress.

Why we like it

  • Bob Vila's best overall after yard testing
  • Easy mapping that reverses instead of restarting
  • Handles slopes up to 84 percent with all wheel drive
  • Wide cutting height range, 0.75 to 4 inches
  • Swappable battery and 3 year warranty

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Large and heavy
  • Network RTK needs a subscription after year one
  • Skips tall weeds and leaves strips near trees
  • Unavailable on Amazon US when we checked
Budget pickAround $1,050

Segway Navimow i210 AWD

Best for small but tricky yards up to a quarter acre.

The Segway Navimow i210 AWD brings wire free mowing and all wheel traction to small yards for about $1,000. Segway lists it at $1,049, down from $1,299, for yards up to 0.25 acre Navimow store ↗. It uses network RTK with vision and does not need a boundary wire or an antenna mast SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗. A VisionFence camera handles obstacles, and the app supports up to 20 zones and no go areas SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗.

It is rated for 45 percent slopes and 1.57 inch steps, with a third driven wheel that engages when traction is needed SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗. It is rated IP66, runs at 59 dB, and has GPS tracking, lift alarms and a PIN lock SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗. The warranty is 3 years, with 2 years on the battery SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗.

The limits fit its size. The 7.1 inch deck is narrow, battery life is about 120 minutes, the cutting height is set by hand on the mower rather than in the app, and there is no physical rain sensor; it relies on forecasts SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗. Built in 4G comes with one year of service, then costs $32.90 a year SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗.

Why we like it

  • Wire free and antenna free
  • All wheel traction for small sloped yards
  • Up to 20 mowing zones
  • 3 year warranty

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Narrow 7.1 inch deck, slow on open lawns
  • Cutting height set by hand
  • No physical rain sensor
  • 4G service costs extra after a year

Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000

Best for steep, tree shaded yards where GPS alone struggles.

The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 uses three navigation systems at once: a 360 degree LiDAR, RTK positioning and dual camera AI vision SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. That combination is the main reason to pay more. Under trees or near buildings, where satellite signal drops, LiDAR and cameras keep it on course. Its cameras recognize more than 300 obstacle types, backed by LiDAR and a bumper SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗.

It is rated for 0.75 acre, about 0.35 acre per charge, and slopes up to 80 percent with all wheel drive SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. The 12 Ah battery runs about 175 minutes, the longest of our picks, and recharges in 120 minutes SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. It includes 3 years of built in 4G data and a 3 year warranty SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. It sold for $2,799 on Amazon US SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗.

Know the downsides before you buy. The standard deck cuts only 1 to 2.7 inches, which is too short for long grass, there is no edge trimmer and no PIN lock, and scheduling does not adjust for weather SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. On a flat, simple lawn, our pick or budget pick will do the job for less.

Why we like it

  • LiDAR, RTK and vision together
  • Longest runtime of our picks, about 175 minutes
  • 80 percent slope rating
  • 3 years of 4G data included

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Short cutting height range
  • No edge trimmer or PIN lock
  • Expensive for simple lawns

Bob Vila named the MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD its best premium mower, praising its build, polished app and smooth navigation through thick grass, steep slopes and complex layouts with little help Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. It uses 360 degree 3D LiDAR and dual AI cameras, so it needs neither a perimeter wire nor an RTK antenna SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗.

It is rated for 0.75 acre per map with two saved maps, 80 percent slopes and 2.4 inch obstacles SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗. It runs about 150 to 170 minutes, cuts from 1.2 to 3.9 inches set in the app, and includes a PIN protected off map alarm, GPS tracking and 3 years of 4G service SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗ MOVA store ↗. MOVA's own store listed it at $2,399 on sale, down from $2,999 MOVA store ↗. The catch: it does not work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home, and Bob Vila notes it is nearly identical to the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 2500 SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗ Bob Vila robot mowers ↗.

Why we like it

  • Bob Vila's best premium pick
  • No wire and no RTK antenna
  • Long runtime and wide height range

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • No voice assistant support
  • No headlights

Best for the easiest setup on flat lawns up to half an acre.

Bob Vila picked the Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR320 for easiest setup, with quick setup, an easy app and little attention needed once running Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. It uses cloud RTK over the internet plus a stereo camera, so there is no wire and no antenna, and its AI vision treats anything that is not grass or leaves as an obstacle SHC, Worx WR320 ↗.

Who this is for

A robot mower is for homeowners who want a neat lawn without weekly mowing: busy families, people who find mowing physically hard, and anyone with a yard that is well kept but time consuming. It mows little and often, which keeps grass at an even height.

It is not for every yard. Robot mowers maintain a lawn rather than cut down tall, overgrown grass; Navimow recommends keeping grass under about 4 inches for the X430, for example SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. Very large properties may need several charges or a larger model SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. You will still need a string trimmer for edges near trees and walls on most models SHC, Navimow X430 ↗.

If your lawn is small and flat, a cheaper model will do the same job as our top pick SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. If it is steep or shaded by trees, look at all wheel drive models with LiDAR.

Why you should trust us

We have not tested these mowers ourselves yet. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with our results.

For now our picks rely on independent testing and published specs. Bob Vila tested seven wire free mowers on a real yard, including thick St. Augustine grass and steep side yards Bob Vila robot mowers ↗. We cross checked every spec against Smart Home Compared's detailed spec pages and the makers' own prices Navimow store ↗ SHC mower catalog ↗.

We checked prices and availability in October 2026. Some brands pay us a commission on sales, but that never affects our picks.

How we picked

We focused on wire free mowers, since burying a boundary wire is the biggest hassle of older robot mowers. We started with models that independent testers recommend and that are sold in the US now, then compared lawn size ratings, slope ratings, navigation, cutting range, runtime, safety features and warranty.

We gave extra weight to easy mapping, because a mower that is hard to set up rarely gets used well, and to all wheel drive for sloped yards.

  • No perimeter wire
  • Strong results in independent yard testing
  • Navigation that holds up under trees and near buildings
  • Slope and lawn size ratings that match real yards
  • Safety features: lift and tilt sensors, PIN lock, obstacle detection
  • At least a 3 year warranty
  • Available from the maker or a major US retailer

What a robot lawn mower can and can't do today

Modern robot mowers map your yard with an app, mow on a schedule, return to their dock to charge and keep going. They find their position in one of three ways: RTK satellite positioning, which is accurate in the open; LiDAR, which scans the surroundings like a robot vacuum; and cameras, which recognize grass, edges and obstacles SHC, Navimow X430 ↗ SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗ SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗. The best use two or three of these together SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗.

Many now climb steep slopes. Our pick is rated for 84 percent, and the LUBA 3 and MOVA LiDAX Ultra for 80 percent SHC, Navimow X430 ↗ SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗ SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗. Most detect obstacles, and several detect pets and children SHC, Navimow X430 ↗.

The limits are real. Camera systems can mistake tall weeds for obstacles and skip them SHC, Navimow X430 ↗. Satellite signal can be unreliable under trees, which is why LiDAR models are recommended for tree covered yards SHC, GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO ↗. Most leave a strip along walls and trees that needs trimming, unless they have an edge cutter like the Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO's TruEdge trimmer SHC, GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO ↗. And most rely on cellular or network services that become paid subscriptions after one to three years SHC, Navimow X430 ↗ SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗ SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗.

Before you buy

Measure your lawn and check its steepest slope. Buy a model rated for more area than you have, since makers' area figures assume ideal conditions; the LUBA 3 AWD 3000, for example, is rated for 0.75 acre but about 0.35 acre per charge SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗.

Look at your sky view. Open lawns suit RTK models like our pick. Yards under trees or between tall buildings suit LiDAR models like the MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD, which needs no RTK antenna SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗. Also check your Wi Fi reaches the yard, or pick a model with built in 4G and budget for the subscription after the included period SHC, Navimow i210 AWD ↗ SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗.

Safety matters with spinning blades. Keep children and pets off the lawn while the mower runs, even with detection features, and use the PIN lock and GPS tracking to deter theft SHC, Navimow X430 ↗.

  • Measure lawn area and the steepest slope
  • Check tree cover and buildings that block satellite signal
  • Plan where the dock goes, with power nearby
  • Budget for 4G or RTK subscriptions after the included period
  • Keep a string trimmer for edges
  • Mow the lawn short before the robot's first run

What to look forward to

Robot mowers are borrowing tricks from robot vacuums: LiDAR mapping, AI cameras that recognize hundreds of objects, and built in edge trimmers SHC, MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 ↗ SHC, LUBA 3 AWD 3000 ↗ SHC, GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO ↗. More brands, including Roborock, Dreame and Ecovacs, now sell mowers in the US SHC mower catalog ↗. Expect better edge cutting and fewer subscriptions as competition grows.

We will add our own yard test results once hands on testing is done, and we will keep checking prices, which change often in the mowing season.
