Who this is for
This guide is for salon owners, booth renters and barbers who miss calls because their hands are full. A missed call on a Saturday morning is often a client who books down the street.
An AI booking assistant answers the call or text, checks your real calendar, books the client into an open slot with the right stylist, and, in some tools, takes a deposit. It answers questions about prices, services and parking, and hands anything tricky to you.
If your clients already book online and rarely call, you may not need this. A link in your bio and good reminder texts may cover you. But if your phone rings while you work, this is one of the most useful AI tools a salon can buy today.
Why you should trust us
We read each vendor's product, pricing and help pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. Where a vendor's own blog gave details its product page did not, such as included minutes, we used it and said so. We also read a legal guide on call recording DMLP recording law ↗ and a published 30 day field report on AI phone answering Bullock field report ↗.
We have not tested these tools hands on yet. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with results, including how each one books a double service appointment and handles a client who wants a specific stylist. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.
How we picked
We looked at AI assistants built into salon booking platforms and general AI receptionists that connect to salon calendars. Booking into the real calendar mattered most. An assistant that only takes messages saves you less time, because you still call the client back. Deposits mattered next, since no shows are a big cost for salons.
We gave weight to built in tools because they already know your menu, staff and policies, which cuts setup time. Vagaro, one of the largest salon platforms, does not include its own phone answering service according to a third party integration page, so we could not include a built in option for Vagaro users AgentZap Vagaro ↗.
- Books, reschedules and cancels in your real calendar
- Collects deposits or explains cancellation fees
- Answers both calls and texts
- Hands off to a person with a transcript
- Published price per month or per location
- Languages your clients speak
- Free trial or free period
What an AI booking assistant can and can't do today
It can book. GlossGenius Reception and Fresha's AI Concierge both book, reschedule and cancel in the live calendar GlossGenius Reception ↗ Fresha AI Concierge ↗. Reception also collects deposits GlossGenius Reception details ↗, and Fresha's tells clients about cancellation fees first Fresha AI Concierge ↗.
It can talk to clients in their language. Fresha's assistant detects the caller's language and responds in it Fresha AI Concierge ↗, Upfirst covers 35+ languages Upfirst pricing ↗, and GlossGenius says Reception speaks English and Spanish GlossGenius blog ↗.
It is weaker at judgment calls: a color correction consult, a client upset about a past visit, or a request that depends on how long a specific stylist really needs. Set those to hand off to you. Some callers also hang up when they hear an AI; in one field report on a trade business, 41 of 214 callers hung up within ten seconds, and saying it was an AI up front helped Bullock field report ↗.
Before you sign up
Check your booking rules first. The AI books from your online booking settings, so wrong service lengths or stylist permissions will cause wrong bookings. Clean up your menu before you turn it on.
Decide on deposits and cancellation fees, and make sure the assistant states them. Then choose when it answers: all the time, only when you miss a call, or only after hours. Boulevard offers all three modes Boulevard AI Receptionist ↗.
Add a recording notice if calls are recorded. Federal law needs one party's consent, but states including California, Florida and Washington require consent from everyone on the call DMLP recording law ↗. Fresha's assistant tells callers when a call is recorded Fresha AI Concierge ↗.
Do the minutes math. If your booking calls run about three minutes each, GlossGenius's 100 minutes covers roughly 33 calls a month GlossGenius blog ↗, while Fresha and Boulevard include 200 minutes per location, with extra minutes at $0.60 each Fresha pricing ↗ Boulevard AI Receptionist ↗. Look at how many calls you miss in a normal week before you pick a plan, and check whether the tool counts spam and hang ups against your allowance. Upfirst, for example, does not bill spam, robocalls or calls under 15 seconds Upfirst pricing ↗.
- Fix service lengths, buffers and stylist permissions
- Set deposit and cancellation rules
- Choose 24/7, backup or after hours mode
- Set a transfer number for the owner or manager
- Read transcripts daily for the first two weeks
What to look forward to
Salon platforms are racing to add AI. GlossGenius already lists waitlists and upsell prompts GlossGenius blog ↗, and Zenoti's assistant suggests add on services during calls and makes confirmation calls Zenoti AI Receptionist ↗. Expect more platforms, including those without a built in assistant today, to add one.
We will update this guide when prices change, free periods end and our hands on testing is complete.
The competition

AgentZapStarts at $109/month
AgentZap adds AI phone answering to platforms without one, including webhook sync with Vagaro AgentZap Vagaro ↗. Its integration page lists plans from $109 a month, and GlossGenius's comparison reports a $499 one time setup fee, which is steep for a small salon AgentZap Vagaro ↗ GlossGenius blog ↗.
