THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes. Free AI writing tools can draft emails, social posts, web copy and proposals well enough to save real time, as long as you edit the result. For most people we recommend ChatGPT's free plan: it includes unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards. Add Grammarly's free plan to catch mistakes in everything else you type.

Millions of people already draft and edit text with free AI chat tools every day, and the free plans from the biggest vendors cover most small business writing jobs.

Our pickFree: unlimited everyday text chats with OpenAI's Luna model, subject to safeguards; separate unpublished caps on uploads, images and voice; ads in the US

ChatGPT

Best for most people who want a free writing helper they can use all day.

ChatGPT has the most generous free text allowance we found. OpenAI's free tier FAQ says free users get unlimited everyday text chats with its Luna model, subject to abuse prevention safeguards ChatGPT free FAQ ↗. The FAQ names GPT-5.6 Luna, while the pricing page now lists GPT-6 Luna for free users ChatGPT free FAQ ↗ ChatGPT pricing ↗. For writing, that is what matters most: you can draft a newsletter, rewrite it three times, then turn it into a social post without watching a meter. Thinking mode, which spends more time on harder requests, is in the mobile app and rolling out on the web ChatGPT free FAQ ↗.

Extras have their own caps. File uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis each have separate usage limits, and when you hit one you wait until a later time or upgrade ChatGPT free FAQ ↗. OpenAI does not publish those numbers; its pricing page simply marks messages with uploads, file uploads and memory as limited on the free plan ChatGPT pricing ↗. If you mostly paste in text and ask for drafts, you will rarely notice.

The catch is ads. Since early 2026, adult free and Go users in the United States see ads, shown separately from answers with a Sponsored label Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗. OpenAI says ads do not change answers, and that advertisers get only performance numbers, not chats Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗. Free users can turn ads off, but their message limits drop Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • Unlimited everyday text chats on the free plan
  • Handles drafting, rewriting, summarizing and brainstorming
  • Thinking mode on mobile for harder tasks
  • Works on web, desktop and phone

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Ads for free users in the US
  • Upload, voice and image limits are not published
  • Turning off ads lowers your message limits
Runner upFree: Sonnet and Haiku models, usage resets on a rolling 5 hour window, up to 5 Projects

Claude

Best for longer documents, projects and people who want no ads.

Claude's free plan is packed with features for writers. It includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, memory across conversations, connectors to other apps, and up to 5 Projects, which keep your notes and past work for a client or topic in one place Claude pricing ↗. It also includes Artifacts and Claude's Docs and Slides tools, so a draft can become a shareable document Claude pricing ↗. Free users get the Sonnet and Haiku models, with a context window of up to 1 million tokens depending on the model, which lets you paste in long reports Claude pricing ↗.

The limit works differently from ChatGPT. Free usage resets on a rolling five hour window, and there is no fixed message count because usage depends on conversation length, model and features Claude pricing ↗. Long conversations with big files use up your allowance faster. Anthropic says Free covers everyday questions and may limit usage further at its discretion Claude pricing ↗.

Claude's pricing page does not list ads on the free plan Claude pricing ↗. Model training is opt out, so if you do not want your chats used to train models, turn that setting off Claude pricing ↗. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, if you need more room Claude pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • Up to 5 Projects to keep client work organized
  • Large context window for long documents
  • Web search, memory and connectors on free
  • No ads listed on the free plan

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Usage resets every five hours, with no published message count
  • Top models are for paid plans
  • Model training is on unless you opt out
Best for fixing what you writeFree: spelling and grammar fixes, tone detection, 100 AI prompts/month

Grammarly

Best for catching mistakes in emails, documents and messages as you type.

A chat tool writes drafts; Grammarly checks what you actually send. Its free plan corrects spelling and grammar and shows you your writing tone Grammarly plans ↗. It also includes 100 generative AI prompts a month, which you can use to draft or rewrite short pieces inside the apps where you already write Grammarly Pro ↗.

The free plan leaves out the features that change your sentences for you. Full sentence rewrites, tone adjustments, plagiarism checks and AI text detection are all unavailable on Free Grammarly plans ↗. Grammarly Pro adds those, plus 2,000 prompts a month and brand voice tools, for $12 a month billed yearly or $30 billed monthly Grammarly Pro ↗. There is a 7 day free trial of Pro Grammarly plans ↗.

We think most owners should run Grammarly Free alongside a chat tool. The chat tool writes the first draft, and Grammarly catches the typo in the reply you wrote in a hurry.

Why we like it

  • Spelling and grammar fixes as you type
  • Shows your writing tone
  • 100 AI prompts a month free
  • Works where you already write

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Gemini's free plan includes Google's 3.6 Flash model, varying access to 3.1 Pro, Canvas for drafting and editing documents, and Deep Research, which reads many web pages and writes a report Google AI plans ↗. That makes it a strong free choice when your writing starts with research, such as a blog post on a local market or a comparison of suppliers.

Free limits are described as standard limits, refreshed every 5 hours until you hit a weekly cap Gemini limits ↗. Google says Deep Research uses more of your allowance than normal chat Gemini limits ↗. One thing to know: Computerworld reports that Gemini inside Google Slides needs a paid Google AI or Workspace plan, not a free account Computerworld on Gemini in Slides ↗. Paid Google AI plans start at $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus Google AI plans ↗.

Why we like it

  • Deep Research on the free plan
  • Canvas for drafting longer pieces
  • Cheap upgrade path at $4.99 a month

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • No published free message numbers
  • Research uses up the allowance faster
Upgrade pickChatGPT Plus: $20/month

ChatGPT Plus: best for people who hit the free caps and want no ads.

If ChatGPT Free works for you but you keep hitting the upload or image caps, or the ads bother you, ChatGPT Plus is the simplest step up. It costs $20 a month ChatGPT Plus ↗. OpenAI says Plus adds priority when demand is high, higher message limits, more model choices, advanced reasoning options, faster replies, and more voice, image, file and Deep Research tools ChatGPT Plus ↗. Paid plans do not show ads Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗.

You keep the same app, history and habits, so there is nothing new to learn. If you prefer Claude's way of working, its Pro plan is the same $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly Claude pricing ↗.

Who this is for

This guide is for small business owners and solo workers who write every day but are not professional writers. You answer customer emails, post on social media, update your website, write job ads, and now and then send a proposal or a policy. Each of those takes longer than it should, and it is easy to put off.

A free AI writing tool gives you a first draft in seconds. You describe what you need, in plain words, and it writes something you can edit. It can also shorten a long email, make a stiff message friendlier, turn notes into a list, or translate a reply. If you write a lot of long, on brand marketing copy across a team, a paid plan or a dedicated marketing tool may suit you better, and we explain when below.

Why you should trust us

We read every vendor's pricing page and help pages and checked each free plan on October 9, 2026. Free plan limits in this guide come from the vendors themselves. Where a vendor does not publish a number, we say so instead of guessing. We also read news coverage of the change that brought ads to ChatGPT's free plan Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗. Every fact links to the page it came from.

We have not yet tested these tools hands on. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with side by side drafts of the same emails, posts and product descriptions. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.

How we picked

We looked at the general AI assistants most people already know, writing checkers, paraphrasing tools and marketing writing tools. We dropped tools with no free plan at all, such as Jasper, which offers only a 7 day trial Jasper pricing ↗, from the free picks. We also dropped tools whose free plan is too small to be useful day to day.

Then we asked one question of each free plan: could a busy owner use this every working day without paying? A free plan with a high, refreshing limit scored well. We also weighed privacy settings, ads, and whether the tool helps with the writing you already do in email and documents, not just in its own window.

  • A free plan you can use daily, not a short trial
  • Clear information on free limits
  • Quality drafts from plain English requests
  • Ability to work with long documents and files
  • Privacy controls and how ads work
  • Works on phone and computer
  • A sensible paid step up

What a free AI writing tool can and can't do today

Free tools now handle most routine business writing. They draft emails and replies, write social captions, turn bullet points into a page of web copy, summarize long documents, and rewrite text for a different tone. Claude's free plan can work with very long inputs, up to a 1 million token context window depending on the model Claude pricing ↗, and Gemini's free plan includes Deep Research for writing that starts with web research Google AI plans ↗.

They still make mistakes. AI tools can state wrong facts with confidence, invent details such as prices or dates, and drift into a generic tone that sounds like everyone else. They do not know your business unless you tell them. The fix is simple: give the tool your facts, ask for a draft, then check every number, name and promise before you send it.

They are also not a replacement for a checker. Even a great draft picks up typos once you edit it. That is why we pair a chat tool with Grammarly's free plan, which fixes spelling and grammar as you type Grammarly plans ↗.

Before you sign up

Decide what you will paste in. Do not share customer personal details, health information, passwords or financial account numbers with a free AI tool. Claude's free plan lets you opt out of model training Claude pricing ↗; look for the same kind of setting in any tool you use.

Know how ads work on your plan. ChatGPT shows ads to adult free users in the United States, chosen partly from your conversations, though OpenAI says advertisers do not get your chats and health and political conversations are excluded Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗.

Build a short brief you can reuse. A paragraph about your business, your customers, your tone and words you never use will make every draft better. Claude's Projects Claude pricing ↗ and ChatGPT's memory ChatGPT pricing ↗ can keep that context for you.

  • Write a one paragraph brief about your business and tone
  • Never paste in sensitive customer data
  • Check privacy and training settings on day one
  • Fact check every number, date and claim
  • Read drafts out loud before sending
  • Use a checker such as Grammarly for final typos
  • Say when content is AI assisted if your industry requires it

What to look forward to

Free writing tools are reaching into the apps where you already work. Claude's free plan already includes connectors for apps and tools Claude pricing ↗, and Grammarly works inside the places you type Grammarly Pro ↗. We expect more free tools to draft replies directly in your inbox and documents.

Ads and tiered limits are also becoming normal on free plans. ChatGPT added ads in early 2026 Gizchina on ChatGPT ads ↗, and Google and Anthropic both use rolling windows that refresh every few hours Gemini limits ↗ Claude pricing ↗. We will update this guide as limits change and as our hands on testing finishes.

The competition

Copy.ai's pricing page lists no free plan; its Chat plan is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for 5 seats with access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models Copy.ai pricing ↗. It is a better fit for teams than for a single owner on a $0 budget.
