Yes. AI can now answer a real share of routine customer emails and chats on its own, as long as you give it good help articles to learn from. For most small businesses we recommend Help Scout: it has a free plan for up to 5 users, paid plans from $25 per user per month, and an AI chatbot you pay for only when it resolves a conversation ($0.75 each) Help Scout pricing ↗.
Every major help desk now ships an AI agent that answers customers from your help content, and vendors price it per resolution, so small businesses are using it today.- Our pickHelp ScoutFree; paid from $25/user/month, AI Answers $0.75/resolution

Help Scout
Best for most small businesses: a simple shared inbox with AI you pay for only when it works.
Help Scout is a shared inbox and help center built for small teams. Its free plan covers up to 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 help center (Help Scout calls it a Docs site), and the comparison table lists 100 contacts a month, 10 saved replies and 30 days of report history on Free Help Scout pricing ↗. The paid Standard plan is listed at $25 per user per month and adds multiple inboxes, live chat and SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, basic workflows and an AI Inbox assistant Help Scout pricing ↗. You can try Standard or Plus free for 15 days without a credit card Help Scout pricing ↗.
The AI pieces are easy to understand. AI Assist, which expands, shortens, edits and translates your replies, is unlimited on every paid plan Help Scout pricing ↗. On Plus ($45 per user per month), you also get unlimited AI Drafts, which write a reply from past conversations and your help articles, and AI Summarize, which turns a long thread into bullet points Help Scout pricing ↗. The customer facing chatbot, AI Answers, is an add on that costs $0.75 per resolution on Standard, Plus and Pro Help Scout pricing ↗. A resolution only counts when the AI closes a conversation without help; if the customer escalates or keeps asking, you are not charged, and you pay at most one resolution per conversation Help Scout pricing ↗.
Two details make Help Scout the safest first choice. You can set a monthly spending cap, and AI Answers switches off when you hit it, so a busy month cannot surprise you Help Scout pricing ↗. And new accounts get 3 months of free, unlimited AI Answers resolutions, which is long enough to see whether the bot actually helps your customers before you pay for it Help Scout pricing ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we'll update this guide with results.
Why we like it
- Free plan for up to 5 users
- AI chatbot billed only per resolution, with a spending cap
- 3 months of free AI Answers for new accounts
- 15 day trial, no card
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- AI Drafts and Summarize need the $45 Plus plan
- Free plan is very limited (100 contacts a month)
- Page does not say clearly whether listed prices are monthly or yearly
Freshdesk
Best low cost help desk with AI sessions included in the price.
Freshdesk is a ticketing help desk from Freshworks. Its Growth plan starts at $19 per agent per month billed yearly, Pro is $55 and Enterprise is $89 Freshdesk pricing ↗. What makes it the budget pick is that its AI agent, Freddy AI Agent, is included on all three plans with the first 500 sessions included; after that, extra sessions cost $49 per 100 Freshdesk pricing ↗. That means a small team can try a customer facing AI bot without adding a separate line item on day one.
The trade offs show up as you grow. The agent side helper, Freddy AI Copilot, is listed as a $29 per agent per month add on for Pro and Enterprise, not Growth Freshdesk pricing ↗. Freddy AI Insights is an Enterprise feature Freshdesk pricing ↗. Freshdesk also does not list a free plan on its pricing page; instead, a 14 day trial drops you into the Enterprise plan so you can try everything Freshdesk pricing ↗. The page shows a 20 percent saving for yearly billing but does not list the monthly per agent prices Freshdesk pricing ↗.
Pick Freshdesk if you want classic tickets, SLAs and a lot of features for a low per agent price, and you are comfortable with a busier interface than Help Scout. If you outgrow the included AI sessions, compare the $49 per 100 sessions rate with Help Scout's $0.75 per resolution before you commit Help Scout pricing ↗ Freshdesk pricing ↗.
Why we like it
- Low starting price per agent
- AI agent included on every plan with 500 sessions
- 14 day trial of the top plan
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- No free plan listed
- Copilot is a $29 add on and not on Growth
- Monthly prices not shown
Gorgias
Best for Shopify and other e-commerce shops, priced by ticket rather than by agent.
Gorgias is a help desk built for online stores. It connects to Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce, and it prices by ticket volume, from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month, instead of charging per agent Gorgias pricing ↗. That suits small shops where several people jump into the inbox now and then. Gorgias says its AI Agent is available on every plan and that you pay only when it resolves a conversation Gorgias pricing ↗.
Gorgias's own page did not show dollar figures when we checked, so we rely on a third party breakdown read on September 2, 2026, written by a competitor DragApp on Gorgias ↗. It lists Starter at $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic at $60 a month ($50 yearly) for 300 tickets, and Pro at $360 a month ($300 yearly) for 2,000 tickets, with overage of $0.36 to $0.40 per ticket DragApp on Gorgias ↗. The same source says the AI Agent adds $30 a month on Starter and Basic for 30 automated interactions, with extra interactions at $1.50 each, and that an interaction counts when the AI handles a thread and no human replies within 72 hours DragApp on Gorgias ↗. Confirm current figures with Gorgias before you buy.
If most of your questions are "where is my order" and "how do I return this", a store connected help desk like Gorgias is the right shape. If you do not sell online, skip it.
Why we like it
- Built for Shopify and other store platforms
- Priced by tickets, not seats
- AI Agent available on every plan
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Vendor page did not show prices when checked
- Per interaction AI costs can climb in busy seasons
- Little reason to use it outside e-commerce
Intercom
Best AI agent for businesses with heavy chat volume, and it works with your current help desk.
Intercom is a customer service platform built around its AI agent, Fin. Seats start at $29 on Essential, $85 on Advanced and $132 on Expert, per seat per month Intercom pricing ↗. Fin costs from $0.99 per outcome, answers email, live chat and phone, can take actions in outside systems, lets you set its tone and answer length, and hands off to a person when needed Intercom pricing ↗. Intercom says setup on your existing help desk takes under an hour Intercom pricing ↗.
The reason it is our upgrade pick is flexibility. Fin can run on top of other help desks, including Zendesk, Salesforce, Freshdesk and HubSpot, and its FAQ also names Zoho, Gorgias and Front Fin pricing ↗. Used that way there is a minimum of 50 outcomes a month Fin pricing ↗. Resolutions, handoffs and routings are $0.99 each, but a sales qualification outcome costs $9.99, so read the outcome list carefully Fin pricing ↗. The 14 day trial needs no credit card and includes unlimited Fin outcomes Fin pricing ↗.
Intercom is more than most small businesses need, and the extras add up: Copilot for your agents is a $29 per agent per month add on, and the Pro add on starts at $100 a month Intercom pricing ↗. Choose it when chat is a main channel, your volume is high enough that a better bot pays for itself, or you want to keep your current help desk and just add a stronger AI agent.
Why we like it
- Fin works across email, chat and phone
- Can sit on top of Zendesk, Freshdesk, HubSpot and others
- 14 day trial with unlimited outcomes, no card
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Higher seat prices
- 50 outcome monthly minimum for Fin on other help desks
- Qualification outcomes cost $9.99
HubSpot
Best free help desk if you also want a free CRM.
HubSpot's Service Hub has a free plan for up to 2 users that needs no credit card HubSpot pricing ↗. It is limited: live chat and email carry HubSpot branding, you get up to 3 canned snippets and 3 email templates, and conversational bots have limited features HubSpot pricing ↗. The upside is that your support conversations sit in the same free CRM as your contacts, which helps if you also use HubSpot for sales or marketing.
The real AI lives on paid plans. HubSpot's Customer Agent answers questions across chat, email, forms and calling, and HubSpot claims it resolves over 65 percent of conversations automatically; that is a vendor figure HubSpot pricing ↗. Buying at least 1 Professional or Enterprise seat includes 14 days of free Customer Agent use HubSpot pricing ↗. Paid plans include monthly HubSpot Credits (500 on Starter, 3,000 on Professional, 5,000 on Enterprise), extra credits cost $0.01 each, and unused credits do not roll over HubSpot pricing ↗. Professional also carries a $1,500 one time onboarding fee HubSpot pricing ↗.
Free plan limits, exactly: up to 2 users, HubSpot branding on chat and email, 3 snippets, 3 email templates, 1 meetings link and limited bots HubSpot pricing ↗. Start here if you need a free shared inbox today; move to Help Scout if you want a bigger free team or pay as you go AI without a big plan jump.
Why we like it
- Free for 2 users, no card
- Support and CRM in one place
- Strong AI agent on paid plans
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Free plan has branding and few templates
- Professional has a $1,500 onboarding fee
- Credit pricing is hard to predict

Who this is for
This guide is for small businesses that answer customer questions by email, website chat or social messages and feel they are falling behind. Maybe you have one or two people sharing a Gmail inbox, questions slip through, and the same ten answers get typed over and over. Customer service software puts every message in one shared inbox, tracks who is handling what, and now adds an AI agent that can answer the routine questions on its own.
If your main problem is missed phone calls, an AI receptionist will help more; see our guide to the best AI receptionist for small businesses. If you only want a chat bubble on your website, our guide to the best AI chatbot for websites covers lighter tools. This guide is for the step in between: a real help desk for a team of roughly 1 to 20 people, with AI built in.
Why you should trust us
We read the current pricing pages of every tool in this guide in October 2026 and recorded the plan names, prices, AI charges and trial terms exactly as listed Help Scout pricing ↗ Freshdesk pricing ↗ HubSpot pricing ↗ Intercom pricing ↗ Fin pricing ↗ Zendesk pricing ↗ Zoho Desk pricing ↗ Tidio pricing ↗. Where a vendor did not show prices, we said so and used a dated third party source instead, and we flag it in the text Gorgias pricing ↗ DragApp on Gorgias ↗. We note when a statistic is the vendor's own claim.
We have not yet tested these tools hands on. Our picks are based on vendor documentation, pricing pages and published product details. Hands on testing is in progress, and we'll update this guide with results. We do not accept payment for placement, and picks are chosen on merit.
How we picked
We started with the help desks small businesses most often consider: Help Scout, Freshdesk, Zendesk, Zoho Desk, HubSpot Service Hub, Intercom, Gorgias and Tidio. We cut tools built mainly for large contact centers and tools with no AI agent that answers customers directly.
The biggest factor was how AI is priced. Vendors now charge for AI per resolution, per session or per outcome, and the differences are large: from $0.75 per resolution at Help Scout to $2.00 pay as you go at Zendesk Help Scout pricing ↗ Zendesk pricing ↗. We favored tools that only charge when the AI actually solves something and that let you cap spending.
- AI agent that answers customers from your own help content, with a clear handoff to a person
- Transparent, predictable AI pricing, ideally per resolution with a spending cap
- A free plan or a free trial without a credit card
- Low starting price for teams of 1 to 10
- Shared inbox basics: assignment, saved replies, help center, reporting
- Channels small businesses use: email, website chat, social messages, SMS
What AI customer service software can and can't do today
Today's AI agents read your help articles, saved replies and past conversations, then answer customers in plain language. Help Scout's AI Drafts, for example, writes replies from past conversations and help content, and its chatbot answers customers directly Help Scout pricing ↗. Intercom's Fin answers over email, chat and phone and can take actions in other systems, such as looking something up, before handing off to a person Intercom pricing ↗. Gorgias connects to store platforms so the AI can work with order questions Gorgias pricing ↗.
Vendors publish high resolution rates. Help Scout's calculator uses a 73 percent average, and HubSpot claims over 65 percent Help Scout pricing ↗ HubSpot pricing ↗. Treat those as best case figures from the companies selling the product. Your rate depends mostly on how good your help content is. If the answer is not written down anywhere, the AI cannot give it.
What AI still does poorly: angry customers, refunds that need judgment, anything that needs a policy exception, and questions where the right answer depends on context your systems do not hold. Every pick here hands those conversations to a person. Plan on AI taking the repetitive first layer, not replacing your team.
Before you sign up
Write or clean up your help articles first. The AI will only be as good as the material it learns from, so spend an afternoon writing answers to your 20 most common questions. Then turn the AI on for one channel, such as website chat, and read its conversations every day for the first two weeks.
Understand exactly what you pay for. A "resolution" at Help Scout is not charged if the customer escalates or keeps asking Help Scout pricing ↗. Zendesk includes 5 automated resolutions per agent per month on its Team plans and charges $1.50 to $2.00 for extras Zendesk pricing ↗. Intercom charges per outcome with different prices for different outcome types Fin pricing ↗. Freshdesk sells extra AI sessions in blocks of 100 Freshdesk pricing ↗. Run the numbers on your real monthly volume.
Check privacy terms if you handle health, legal or financial information. Help Scout lists HIPAA compliance only on its Pro plan Help Scout pricing ↗. Make sure customers can always reach a person, and tell them when they are talking to a bot.
- Write help articles for your top 20 questions before switching on AI
- Set a monthly AI spending cap where the tool allows it
- Start with one channel and review AI answers daily
- Keep an easy "talk to a person" option
- Check compliance needs (HIPAA, data location) before you import customer data
- Note whether listed prices are monthly or yearly
What to look forward to
AI agents are moving from answering questions to taking actions: issuing refunds within limits, changing bookings or updating orders. Intercom already advertises actions on outside systems, and Freshdesk now sells MCP actions as an add on, with a yearly allowance on each plan Intercom pricing ↗ Freshdesk pricing ↗. Expect more of this, and expect pricing per outcome to become the norm. We will revisit this guide when our hands on testing is complete.
The competition
ZendeskStarts at $19/agent/month billed yearly ($25 monthly)
Zendesk is the best known help desk, with Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed yearly or $25 monthly and a 14 day trial Zendesk pricing ↗. Its AI agents are on every plan, but only 5 automated resolutions per agent per month are included on Team plans, extras cost $1.50 to $2.00, and Copilot is a $50 per agent add on Zendesk pricing ↗. That makes AI more expensive than Help Scout for a small team.
Zoho DeskNot listed in USD on page text
Zoho Desk has a free plan with three user licenses and a 15 day trial with no card Zoho Desk pricing ↗. Its Express plan includes AI agents with up to 30 million free tokens a month when you use Zoho's model Zoho Desk pricing ↗. We could not confirm US dollar prices on its pricing page, so we could not recommend it on value; it is a good fit if you already use Zoho.
TidioStarts at $24.17/month; Lyro AI from $32.50/month
Tidio is a chat first tool with a free plan of 50 conversations a month and 10 seats, and its Lyro AI agent starts at $32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations Tidio pricing ↗. It is great for a website chat widget, which is why it leads our chatbot guide, but it is lighter than a full help desk for email heavy support.
Fin by IntercomStarts at $0.99 per outcome (50 outcome monthly minimum)
If you like your current help desk, you can buy Intercom's Fin on its own at $0.99 per outcome with a 50 outcome monthly minimum Fin pricing ↗. It is a strong add on rather than a replacement, which is why we cover it under Intercom above.
