Will AI replace paralegals?

Not the whole job. Legal AI tools already summarize case records and draft research memos, contracts and discovery papers, but an attorney and a careful paralegal still check every citation, meet clients and run the case. BLS expects little or no change in paralegal jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 40,800 openings a year, and says AI will limit demand.

Quick questions

Will AI replace paralegals?

Not soon, but it will shrink how many are needed. BLS projects little or no change in paralegal jobs from 2025 to 2035 and says demand will be limited by AI, which makes each paralegal more efficient [2]. About 40,800 openings a year are still expected, mostly to replace people who leave [2].

What AI tools do paralegals use?

Common ones include CoCounsel and Lexis+ AI for research, drafting and document review [3] [4], Clio for pulling deadlines from court documents and drafting client updates [5], Spellbook for contract redlines in Word [6] and Briefpoint for discovery drafts [7]. Each still expects a person to check the output.

Can AI draft legal documents on its own?

It can produce a first draft, but not a finished one. Briefpoint says all content should be reviewed by a qualified attorney before service [7], and Thomson Reuters says the attorney stays in control of facts, arguments and citations [3]. Courts had issued an estimated 712 decisions about made up AI content in filings by late 2025, some with fines over $15,000 [8].

How much time can AI save a paralegal?

Professionals in a 2025 Thomson Reuters survey expected AI to save them about 5 hours a week within a year [9]. Vendor claims run higher, such as Briefpoint's 30 or more hours per case on discovery [7], but those are not independent measurements.

Is becoming a paralegal still worth it in 2026?

It can be, if you plan to work alongside AI. The median paralegal earned $62,890 in May 2025 and law firms are expected to remain the largest employer [2]. Paralegals who can run legal AI tools well and catch their mistakes will be the ones firms keep.
