AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace registered nurses?
No. AI is starting to take paperwork off nurses' plates, with ambient tools that turn a bedside conversation into flowsheet entries and drafted shift handoff summaries for the nurse to review, but giving medications, assessing patients and catching a decline stay with a licensed nurse. BLS expects RN jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 180,800 openings a year.

| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record patients' information and vital signs in the chart | AI does this today | Microsoft Dragon Copilot | Microsoft Dragon Copilot listens during care and fills Epic flowsheets such as vitals, pain, intake and output, and the nurse reviews, edits and files the entries. [3][4] |
| Keep accurate, detailed nursing notes and reports | AI helps, you check | Microsoft Dragon Copilot | Ambient tools draft nurse notes from what was said at the bedside, but you sign the note and answer for it, so every line still gets your review. [3][4] |
| Monitor and report changes in a patient's condition | AI helps, you check | Epic Sepsis Model, Columbia CONCERN early warning | Early warning alerts like sepsis scores flag patients at risk, but one widely used model missed about two thirds of sepsis cases in a hospital study, so your own assessment still decides when to call the doctor. [5][6] |
| Run a unit's staffing, scheduling and budget | AI helps, you check | Acuity and staffing systems | Many hospitals use acuity software to predict nursing hours, but 69% of union nurses whose employer uses it said the computer's acuity did not match their own assessment. [7] |
| Give medications and watch for reactions or side effects | Still human | None | Checking the right patient, drug and dose at the bedside and recognizing a reaction is licensed, hands on work. |
| Assess the needs of patients and families | Still human | None | A full assessment uses touch, sight and conversation, and nurses report that software generated assessments often disagree with what they see. [7] |
| Coordinate care plans with doctors and the care team, including shift handoffs | AI helps, you check | Google Gemini, Google Gemini | Epic drafts handoff summaries from earlier shifts and Manipal Hospitals says its Gemini based summaries cut handoff time by 70%, but nearly half of nurses getting AI handoff reports said they did not match their own assessment, so you check the summary and still talk it through. [12][13][7] |
| Change care plans based on how a patient responds | Still human | None | Adjusting care means weighing many small signs together and taking responsibility under your nursing license. |
| Teach patients and families about their condition, care at home and prevention | Still human | None | Making sure a scared patient really understands their discharge instructions takes patience and reading the person in front of you. |
| Prepare patients for exams and treatments and assist during them | Still human | None | Positioning, comforting and safely assisting a patient during a procedure is physical, in the room work. |
| Supervise nursing assistants and less experienced staff | Still human | None | Delegating safely and stepping in when something looks wrong are core parts of a nurse's legal responsibility. |
| Run infection control practices on the unit | Still human | None | Isolation, hand hygiene and outbreak response depend on people watching and correcting practice on the floor. |
| Prepare rooms, sterile instruments and supplies | Still human | None | Setting up a sterile field and keeping supplies ready is hands on work in a busy unit. |
| Train new nurses, students and support staff | Still human | None | Precepting a new graduate means showing skills at the bedside and judging when they are ready to work alone. |
| Refer patients to specialists and community resources | Still human | None | Matching a patient to the right home care, social service or specialist depends on knowing their situation and your local network. |

Nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist or nurse midwife
Advanced practice nurses diagnose, prescribe and deliver anesthesia or births under their own license, which is work AI cannot take responsibility for. It builds directly on your RN license but needs a master's degree, state APRN licensure and a national certification exam. [8]

Medical and health services manager
Managers run units, budgets and staffing, and they decide how AI tools are rolled out, so clinical experience is a real advantage. Many start as nurse managers; a bachelor's degree is typical and some roles prefer a master's. [9]

Quick questions
Will AI replace nurses?
No. BLS projects registered nurse jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, adding about 194,700 jobs, because an aging population needs more care [2]. Healthcare practitioner jobs as a group are among the fastest growing in the BLS projections [11].
What AI tools do nurses use?
The biggest change is ambient charting. Microsoft Dragon Copilot records nurse and patient interactions in Epic Rover and drafts flowsheet entries the nurse reviews and files [3], and Microsoft made it generally available in the U.S. in December 2025 [4]. Epic also drafts shift handoff summaries [12], and many hospitals run early warning scores such as sepsis alerts [5].
Can a nurse override an AI alert?
It depends on hospital policy. In one National Nurses United survey, 24% of nurses had been prompted by AI to make a choice they felt was not in the patient's best interest, and 31% of those were not allowed to override it [6]. In a 2024 NNU survey, 40% said they could not change AI scores predicting outcomes or discharge readiness [7].
Are AI sepsis alerts accurate?
Not always. A 2021 University of Michigan study in JAMA Internal Medicine found the Epic Sepsis Model missed about two thirds of sepsis cases while alerting on 18% of all hospitalized patients [5]. That is why alerts support nursing judgment instead of replacing it.
