AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace travel agents?
Partly. AI chatbots now draft itineraries, research destinations and write marketing, AI support agents handle many routine rebookings in corporate travel, and BLS says travelers using AI tools to plan their own trips will limit demand. But BLS still expects little or no change in travel agent jobs from 2025 to 2035, because people keep paying for personal advice and for someone to fix things when a trip goes wrong.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (41-3041.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write trip descriptions, newsletters and social posts that promote packages | AI does this today | ChatGPT, Canva | BLS notes AI lets agents do marketing work more efficiently, and chatbots plus Canva's AI now produce the copy and the graphic for a cruise promotion in minutes, which you edit for accuracy. [2][4][7] |
| Plan and describe custom itineraries and day trips | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude | Chatbots with deep research turn a client's wish list into a day by day draft fast, but they can invent opening hours or travel times, so you check every leg against suppliers you trust. [4][5] |
| Look up fares, schedules and options for a trip | AI helps, you check | Perplexity, Google Gemini | AI search tools with linked sources speed up research on routes and options, but live fares and seat availability still come from booking systems and supplier sites. [5][6] |
| Work out the total cost of travel and accommodations and quote it | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT | AI can build a cost spreadsheet from supplier quotes you paste in, but taxes, fees and fare rules change, so you confirm the final quote before the client pays. [4] |
| Book flights, hotels, rental cars and events by computer or phone | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT | Agents like ChatGPT Work can take actions across apps and pause for your approval on important steps, but you hold supplier logins, client payment details and responsibility for every booking. [3] |
| Keep records on clients, vendors and travel packages | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT | Project spaces in AI assistants keep each client's files, preferences and past chats together, but deciding what to record and keeping private details safe is still your job. [4] |
| Explain local customs, attractions and entry rules such as passports and visas | AI helps, you check | Google Gemini, Perplexity | AI drafts a destination guide in seconds, but BLS lists advising on documents and entry rules as core to the job, and a wrong visa answer can strand a client, so you verify on official sites. [2][5][6] |
| Talk with clients to learn their destination, dates, budget and needs | Still human | None | A honeymoon, a family reunion and a client with mobility needs call for very different trips, and people open up about that to a person. |
| Arrange and sell tour packages and promotions from carriers | Still human | None | Selling a package rests on your relationships with cruise lines, resorts and tour operators and on a client trusting your recommendation. |
| Issue or request tickets through carrier and booking systems | Still human | None | Ticketing runs through airline and industry booking systems, whose AI booking features were still being shown as demos in early 2026, and fixing a ticketing error often means a call to the airline desk. [14] |
| Collect payment for transportation and accommodations | Still human | None | Taking deposits, handling refunds and spotting fraud involves real money and legal duties, so a person stays accountable for it. |
| Rebook and rescue plans when flights are cancelled or problems hit during a trip | AI helps, you check | Navan Ava | In corporate travel, Navan says its AI support agent handled about 60% of customer contacts in mid 2026, including itinerary changes, rebookings and refunds, but BLS says travelers still lean on agents when trips go wrong, and a stranded client with a complex trip needs you. [13][2] |

Quick questions
Will AI replace travel agents?
Not entirely. BLS projects little or no change in travel agent jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 5,900 openings a year [2]. It says AI tools let travelers book their own trips, which limits demand, but people still rely on agents for personalized advice and for help when travel problems come up [2].
Can ChatGPT plan and book a whole trip?
It can draft the plan, and agent features can now act across apps with your approval [3] [4]. Booking is still the weak spot: live fares come from booking systems, and nobody at the chatbot company will rebook you when a flight is cancelled. That gap is where agents earn their fee.
Will AI replace travel agents in 10 years?
Simple bookings will keep moving to self service, as they did when online booking arrived. In 2016 BLS projected a 12% drop in travel agent jobs from 2014 to 2024 because of online booking [9], yet the 2025 count was 61,500 agents [2]. Complex trips, groups and luxury travel are where agents are holding on.
How many travel agents are there in the US?
BLS counted 61,500 travel agent jobs in 2025 [2]. Industry groups say official counts miss many home based independent contractors; in 2018 ASTA cited a Census figure of about 105,000 agency employees and IBISWorld estimated about 232,800 agents [8].
Is becoming a travel agent a good career with AI?
It can work if you specialize. The median travel agent earned $50,160 in May 2025 [2]. In a late 2024 survey of U.S. and Canadian advisors in the Travelsavers and NEST networks, 32% already used AI at least occasionally [15]. Agents who use AI for research and marketing [2] [4] and spend their time on niches like cruises, groups or complex international trips have the strongest case for clients to pay them.
