AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace retail salespeople?
No, but it is changing the sales floor. Chains like Lowe's, Walmart and Home Depot now give associates AI assistants for product questions, translation and stock tasks, and robots scan shelves for empty spots, yet greeting shoppers, fitting, demonstrating and closing a sale still need a person. BLS expects little or no change in retail salesperson jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 550,600 openings a year across retail sales work.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (41-2031.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommend products and help customers find them in the store | AI helps, you check | Lowe's Mylow Companion, Home Depot Magic Apron, Copilot in Dynamics 365 Store Commerce | Lowe's associates can ask Mylow Companion on their handhelds which fertilizer fits a lawn, and Home Depot is testing an assistant that shows live stock and aisle locations, but you still walk the customer over and read what they really want. [3][7][11] |
| Answer questions about the store and its merchandise | AI helps, you check | Walmart associate app, Lowe's Mylow Companion | Walmart's associate assistant already answers about 3 million questions a day on things like where an item lives, so you look things up faster, but you are the one who explains it to the shopper. [3][4] |
| Explain how products work and how to care for them | AI helps, you check | Lowe's Mylow Companion | An AI assistant can pull up how to fix a leaky faucet or care for a fabric in seconds, but the customer trusts the person in front of them to make it make sense. [3] |
| Ring up purchases and take cash or card payments | AI helps, you check | Everseen | Self checkout lanes watched by AI cameras let shoppers ring themselves up, but staffed registers remain and an employee still steps in when the camera flags a missed scan. [6] |
| Count stock on the shelves and request new stock | AI does this today | Simbe Tally, Walmart VizPick with RFID | Shelf scanning robots such as Simbe Tally already roam aisles in dozens of chains, spotting empty shelves and misplaced items and sending staff a ranked task list, so the counting is done for you where they are installed. [4][5] |
| Price, arrange and display merchandise to promote sales | AI helps, you check | Simbe Tally, Walmart VizPick | Robots now catch wrong price tags and Walmart's VizPick shows which items need to move to the floor, but building an attractive display and restocking it is hands on work. [4][5] |
| Keep up with current sales, promotions and store policies | AI helps, you check | Walmart associate app | Walmart is upgrading its assistant to turn long process guides into step by step instructions, which makes policies easier to look up, but knowing them well enough to answer on the spot is still on you. [4] |
| Place special orders or call other stores to find an item | AI helps, you check | Home Depot Magic Apron | Store AI now combines live local inventory and product locations, so checking another store takes seconds, but placing the order and keeping the customer happy while they wait is your job. [7] |
| Watch for theft and handle security risks | AI helps, you check | Everseen | Computer vision at self checkout quietly alerts an employee when an item is not scanned, but deciding how to approach a shopper safely and fairly takes human judgment. [6] |
| Estimate how much material a project needs, such as paint or flooring | AI helps, you check | Home Depot Magic Apron | Home Depot's AI turns a described project into a grouped materials list and suggests missed items, but it does not measure the room, so your quantity math and questions still matter. [7] |
| Greet customers and figure out what each one wants | Still human | None | Reading whether a shopper wants help or space, and making them feel welcome, is the part of the job people come to a store for. |
| Demonstrate products and help customers try on or fit items | Still human | None | Showing how a mattress feels, a blender runs or a jacket fits needs a person standing next to the customer. |
| Sell delivery, protection plans, financing or service contracts | Still human | None | Add on sales depend on trust built during the conversation, and you answer for what you promised at the counter. |
| Handle exchanges and returns | Still human | None | Returns mean checking the item, applying policy and calming upset customers, which software cannot do face to face. |
| Clean shelves, counters and tables | Still human | None | Wiping shelves, counters and tables around shoppers is quick physical work, and store robots today scrub floors rather than dust displays. |
| Bag or package purchases and wrap gifts | Still human | None | Packing fragile items and wrapping a gift neatly is quick hands on work that stays with staff. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace retail sales associates?
Not in most stores. BLS projects little or no change in retail salesperson jobs from 2025 to 2035 and says online shopping, not AI, is the main thing cutting demand [2]. Big chains are using AI to support associates instead, such as Lowe's putting Mylow Companion in all 1,700 plus stores [3].
What AI tools do retail workers use on the sales floor?
Walmart associates have AI task lists, live translation in 44 languages and an assistant that handles over 3 million questions a day [4]. Lowe's associates ask Mylow Companion product and project questions by voice [3], and shelf scanning robots like Simbe Tally send staff lists of empty shelves and wrong prices [5].
Are self checkout and AI cameras taking cashier and sales jobs?
They take over some ringing up, but they still lean on staff. Kroger's Everseen cameras alert an employee when an item is missed at self checkout so the worker can step in [6]. BLS still expects about 550,600 openings a year across retail sales work [2].
Is retail a good job to start with AI changing things?
It can be a solid start if you treat it as a stepping stone. Retail salespersons earned a median of $17.03 an hour in May 2025 [2], and the selling and people skills you build transfer to licensed roles like insurance sales [9] or opticianry [8].
Will AI robots stock shelves and help customers in stores?
Robots already scan shelves: Simbe says more than 3,000 Tally robots are under contract across 75 plus retail banners [5]. They spot problems and hand the fix to a person, and Home Depot's in store AI points shoppers to aisles rather than replacing staff [7].
