AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace technical writers?

Not the whole job. Coding agents and docs platforms now draft help pages, flag docs that a code change made stale and suggest fixes from support tickets, but checking that every step matches the real product, interviewing engineers and owning accuracy in safety critical documents stays with the writer. BLS expects only 1 percent growth from 2025 to 2035 and says AI tools may slow hiring.

Edit and standardize material written by engineers and other writersAI helps, you checkGrammarly, GitBook AgentGrammarly and GitBook Agent can check drafts against your team style guide and fix many issues, but deciding when a term is technically wrong rather than just off style needs subject knowledge. [6][13]
Track product changes to decide which published docs need revisingAI helps, you checkGitHub Copilot, GitHub CopilotMintlify's agent watches your code repositories, flags which merged changes may need doc updates and drafts them, but someone still has to catch the changes that never reach the repo, such as a new safety rule or a renamed plan. [12][5]
Study specifications, mockups and source code to explain how a product worksAI helps, you checkOpenAI CodexFor software you can ask Codex questions about a codebase and get an explanation in plain words, but for hardware, drawings and physical samples the understanding still has to come from you. [4]
Interview engineers and production staff and read journals to learn the subjectAI helps, you checkChatGPTRecording tools transcribe and summarize a subject matter expert interview so you can focus on asking good questions, though OpenAI warns transcripts can contain mistakes and you need consent to record. [8]
Help lay out material for publicationAI helps, you checkChatGPTAI can turn a draft into a formatted document or slide deck, but structured publishing in tools such as MadCap Flare, FrameMaker or DITA still needs your setup and a final layout check. [1][7]
Review published materials and recommend changes in scope, format and contentAI helps, you checkGitBook AgentGitBook Agent can read support tickets and conversations to spot gaps in your docs and propose updates, but deciding that a 200 page manual should become ten short task guides depends on knowing your readers and product roadmap. Select photos, diagrams and charts to illustrate materialStill humanNoneAn illustration in a procedure must show the exact part and screen the reader will see, and a generated image that is almost right can send someone the wrong way.
Confer with customers, vendors and executives to set documentation specsStill humanNoneAgreeing on scope, deadlines and regulatory requirements with several stakeholders is negotiation that happens in meetings.
Review manufacturer catalogs, drawings and maintenance dataStill humanNoneCross checking torque values, part numbers and warnings against source data is accountability work, because an error in a maintenance manual can hurt someone.
Observe production and testing to get procedures rightStill humanNoneWatching a technician actually do the task on the floor or in the lab is how writers catch the steps nobody thought to mention.
Draw sketches of materials or assembly sequencesStill humanNoneAssembly sketches have to match the real hardware step by step, which means working from the parts and CAD files with the engineers.
Keep records and files of work and revisionsStill humanNoneVersion control already logs every change, and what remains is the human sign off on which version is approved for release, which in regulated products carries legal weight.

Quick questions

Will AI replace technical writers?

It is shrinking growth more than wiping out the job. BLS projects just 1 percent growth from 2025 to 2035 and says AI tools that make these workers more productive may slow employment growth, with about 3,200 openings a year [2]. Microsoft researchers scored technical writers at 0.373 on their AI applicability scale, among the higher scores they reported [3].

Will AI replace technical writers in 10 years?

Fewer writers may cover more products, but the job is still projected to exist at roughly its current size in 2035 [2]. The parts that are hardest to automate are interviewing experts, observing real procedures and owning the accuracy of manuals people rely on for safety [1].

Can AI write software documentation from code?

It can draft it. OpenAI says engineers use Codex for drafting documentation and that it can answer questions about a codebase [4], and GitHub's cloud agent can create or update docs alongside a code change [5]. GitHub also warns its output may look valid without being correct [5], so a writer still tests each step.

What AI tools do technical writers use?

Coding agents such as OpenAI Codex and GitHub Copilot for docs as code [4] [5], docs platforms such as Mintlify, whose agent flags code changes that need doc updates [12], and GitBook Agent, which proposes fixes from support tickets [13]. Grammarly's Style Guide helps with consistency [6], and GitBook's 2025 survey of over 450 docs professionals found 60% already use generative AI in their workflow [14].

Is technical writing a good career in 2026?

It still pays well, with a median of $90,390 in May 2025 [2], but entry level hiring is tight because growth is slow. Writers who specialize in regulated or complex products, or who move into project management, which BLS projects to grow 7 percent, are on firmer ground [9].
