AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace accountants?

No, but it is taking the data entry. Invoice capture, transaction coding and first pass reconciliations are now largely automated, while judging risk, signing off on statements and advising clients still need a qualified accountant. BLS expects accountant and auditor jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, with about 115,300 openings a year.

Quick questions

Will AI replace accountants in the next 10 years?

Unlikely. BLS projects accountant and auditor jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 115,300 openings a year [2]. It expects AI and cloud tools to cut routine work such as data entry without reducing overall demand, and to make advisory and analytical work more prominent [2].

Is accounting still a good career with AI?

Yes for people willing to work with the tools. The median accountant or auditor earned $83,680 in May 2025 [2]. In a 2025 Intuit survey of 700 accounting professionals, 46% used AI daily and 79% expected demand for advisory services to grow, though the report was sponsored by a software vendor [10].

Which accounting jobs are most at risk from AI?

Entry level work like invoice entry and transaction coding is the most exposed, since capture tools claim over 99% accuracy reading receipts and invoices [4]. An AICPA and CIMA article notes that some link Big 4 cuts to graduate hiring with AI taking over entry level tasks [11]. Juniors who learn review, analysis and client work early are better placed.

Can AI do an audit?

It can do much of the analysis but not the audit. Tools like MindBridge score risk on 100% of general ledger entries [6], yet auditors still set scope, test controls and sign the opinion. In 2025 Deloitte agreed to partially refund the Australian government after a report written with help from Azure OpenAI contained a fabricated court quote and references to papers that do not exist [9].

What AI tools do accountants use?

Common choices include QuickBooks AI agents for categorizing transactions and helping reconcile [3], Dext for invoice capture [4], Double for month end close [5], Blue J for cited tax research [7] and Copilot in Excel for reconciliations and variance analysis [8]. Each still expects a person to review the output.
