AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace sales representatives?

Not the whole job. CRM agents now log deals and find leads, order tools turn buyer emails into draft quotes, and shelf photo apps flag empty facings, but demonstrating products, negotiating terms and earning a buyer's trust still take a person. BLS expects little or no change in wholesale and manufacturing sales jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 123,400 openings a year.

Quick questions

Will AI replace sales representatives?

Not soon for wholesale and manufacturing reps. BLS projects little or no change in employment from 2025 to 2035 and about 123,400 openings a year, though it says AI and chatbots may limit growth [2]. Across all sales jobs, BLS expects AI tools in the sales process to add to losses in a group projected to shrink 1.4 percent [10].

What AI tools do sales reps use?

QuickBooks Customer Agent finds leads, drafts follow ups and tracks opportunities [3], distributor tools such as Proton turn emailed requests into draft quotes that reps approve [14], and shelf photo apps such as ShelfWatch report out of stocks from a rep's pictures [16]. AI support agents such as Fin answer routine order questions [4], and O*NET lists Salesforce and HubSpot among the hot technologies for this job [1].

Can AI chatbots take orders from wholesale buyers?

They can handle the routine part. Intercom says Fin reads live account data, checks order status and resolves an average of 76 percent of support conversations, a vendor figure [4]. BLS still expects online wholesale sales to mostly complement face to face selling rather than replace it [2].

Is wholesale sales a good career with AI?

Yes, if you build relationships and product expertise. The median pay was $76,460 in May 2025, and reps selling technical and scientific products earned a median of $104,920 [2]. Microsoft researchers scored wholesale and manufacturing sales reps at 0.31 for AI applicability, lower than service sales reps at 0.35 [5].

Which sales jobs are safest from AI?

Roles built on complex products, negotiation and leadership look safest. BLS projects sales manager jobs to grow 4.5 percent from 2025 to 2035 [11], while reps for technical and scientific products are projected to grow 1 percent compared with a 1 percent decline for other wholesale reps [2].
