AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace teachers?

No. AI now drafts lesson plans, quizzes, worksheets and feedback, and teachers who use it weekly report saving about six hours a week, but running a classroom, reading students and answering to parents stay human. BLS expects little or no change in high school teacher jobs from 2025 to 2035 because of falling enrollment, not AI, with about 63,500 openings a year.

Quick questions

Will AI replace teachers?

No. BLS projects little or no change in high school teacher jobs from 2025 to 2035 and points to falling enrollment and school budgets, not technology, as the reason [2]. About 63,500 openings a year are still expected as teachers retire or leave [2].

How many teachers use AI?

A Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey of over 2,000 teachers found 60% used AI tools for work in the 2024 to 2025 school year [4]. Teachers who use it weekly save an average of 5.9 hours a week, about six weeks over a school year [3]. A year earlier RAND found only 25% used AI, mostly for lesson planning [9].

What are the best AI tools for teachers?

MagicSchool offers more than 80 teacher tools, from lesson plans and rubrics to report card comments [5]. Khanmigo for Teachers is free for U.S. teachers [7], ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified U.S. K to 12 teachers and plans multi week units [13], and Brisk drafts feedback inside Google Docs [6]. All of them still need a teacher to check the output.

Can AI grade essays?

It can draft feedback, not final grades. Brisk writes comments into a student's Google Doc for the teacher to deliver [6], but a teacher educator told Fortune AI suits low level grading like multiple choice and is weaker on nuanced work [4].

Can teachers trust AI detectors like Turnitin?

Only as one piece of evidence. Turnitin claims a false positive rate under 1% for fully human writing and says it may miss about 15% of AI text, and it states the score should not be the sole basis for action [8]. Turnitin itself tells educators to plan for how to talk with a student after a false positive [14].
