AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace truck drivers?
Not soon. Driverless semis now haul freight on about 10 routes in Texas and Arizona, and software already logs hours, plans truck legal routes and watches for drowsy driving, but nearly all freight still moves with a licensed driver who inspects, secures and delivers the load. BLS projects 4 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 214,500 openings a year.

The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (53-3032.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep logs of working hours and duty status | AI does this today | FMCSA registered ELDs | Electronic logging devices sync with the engine and record on duty and off duty time, miles and vehicle motion automatically, so paper logbooks are mostly gone and you mainly review and certify. [5] |
| Plan or adjust routes around traffic, weather and restrictions | AI helps, you check | Trimble CoPilot, PC*Miler | Truck navigation such as Trimble CoPilot builds routes for your height, weight and hazmat load, steers around low bridges and reroutes for live traffic, but you still judge weather, parking and what the road actually looks like. [6] |
| Collect delivery instructions and verify routes | AI helps, you check | Trimble CoPilot | Dispatch systems push the planned trip and stop details straight to the cab screen, but confirming the gate, the dock and the receiver's rules is still on you. [6] |
| Check bills of lading and load paperwork for accuracy | AI helps, you check | Samsara Driver App | Driver apps let you photograph bills of lading and scale tickets and send them to dispatch, which cuts paperwork, but you still check that the load matches the papers. [8] |
| Get signatures and receipts for delivered goods | AI helps, you check | Samsara Driver App | Proof of delivery and fuel receipts can be captured and submitted in the driver app, while dealing with the receiver and any damaged freight stays in person. [8] |
| Report accidents, vehicle defects and violations | AI helps, you check | Samsara AI Dash Cam, Samsara Driver App | AI dash cams flag risky moments and send alerts to safety managers, and the driver app takes accident reports and citations, but you still describe what happened and answer for it. [7][8] |
| Drive heavy trucks and tractor trailers to deliver freight | Still human | None | Aurora runs driverless trucks on about 10 routes in Texas and Arizona and aims for more than 200 trucks by the end of 2026, but that is tiny next to the country's freight, which still needs a licensed driver behind the wheel. [3][4][12][13] |
| Inspect the truck's mechanical, safety and emergency equipment | Still human | None | Pre trip inspections mean crawling around the rig, checking brakes, tires and lights by hand and signing for it. |
| Inspect, secure and cover cargo with chains, straps, blocks or tarps | Still human | None | Securing a load safely depends on hands on work and judgment about each load's shape and weight. |
| Couple and uncouple trailers | Still human | None | Cranking landing gear, hooking air lines and checking the fifth wheel lock is physical work done at the truck. |
| Back and maneuver trucks into loading docks | Still human | None | Tight docks, crowded yards and signals from loading crews still need a skilled driver's eyes and hands. |
| Make roadside repairs such as changing tires or putting on chains | Still human | None | Fixing problems on the shoulder in bad weather is physical work no software does. |
| Follow safety rules for hazardous materials | Still human | None | Hauling hazmat requires an endorsement and a background check, and the driver is the one responsible for handling it safely on the road. |
| Load and unload freight or direct the crew doing it | Still human | None | Moving goods on and off a trailer and guiding a crew happens on site with people and equipment. |

Quick questions
Will self driving trucks replace truck drivers?
Not in the near term. Aurora began driverless freight runs between Dallas and Houston in May 2025 [3] and by February 2026 ran about 10 routes across Texas and Arizona, including a roughly 1,000 mile Fort Worth to Phoenix lane, with a goal of more than 200 driverless trucks by the end of 2026 [12]. Kodiak hauls frac sand on private oilfield roads in West Texas [4]. That is tiny next to about 2.2 million heavy truck drivers, and BLS still projects 4 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035 [2].
Is truck driving a good career in 2026?
It remains a large, steady field. The median heavy truck driver earned $58,640 in May 2025, and BLS expects about 214,500 openings a year, mostly to replace drivers who retire or leave [2]. You need a commercial driver's license, and hazmat work needs an extra endorsement and background check [2].
Do AI dash cams watch truck drivers?
Many fleets use them. Samsara's drowsiness detection looks for signs like head nodding, yawning and face rubbing, gives in cab alerts and sends text or email alerts to safety managers [7]. Fleets use the footage for coaching, so knowing how your company uses it matters.
What parts of trucking are already automated?
Mostly the paperwork and planning. Electronic logging devices record duty status automatically from the engine [5], truck navigation plans routes around low bridges and weight limits [6], and driver apps capture bills of lading and proof of delivery [8]. Driving, inspections and securing cargo are still done by people.
