AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace pharmacists?

No. Robots and AI already pick, fill and photo check prescriptions in large hospital and mail order pharmacies, but a licensed pharmacist still verifies each order, counsels patients and answers for every dose. BLS projects 5% job growth from 2025 to 2035 with about 12,500 openings a year, although demand in retail stores is limited by consolidation and mail order.

Where pharmacists can move next

GROWING · $123,860

Medical and health services manager

Health systems need leaders who understand medication safety, budgets and the new automation, and running a pharmacy department is solid management experience. Growth is far faster than for pharmacists, and many employers want clinical or administrative work history. [8]

Median pay $123,860 · outlook +24%

GROWING · $103,410

Medical scientist

BLS lists the Pharm.D. among the degrees medical scientists hold, and drug development and clinical research rely on people who know how medicines behave in patients. Most roles also expect research training, and median pay is lower than for pharmacists. [7]

Median pay $103,410 · outlook +13%

GROWING · $105,850

Computer systems analyst (pharmacy informatics)

Hospitals need pharmacists who can configure dispensing robots, order sets and interaction alerts, which is systems analysis work. Your drug knowledge makes those systems safer, though you would need to add IT and data skills. [9]

Quick questions

Will AI replace pharmacists in the next 10 years?

Unlikely. BLS projects pharmacist jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, with demand rising in hospitals and clinics as pharmacists take on more medication management, while retail demand is held back by consolidation and online or mail order filling [2]. Robots are taking over much of the counting and filling in big central pharmacies [3].

Can ChatGPT answer medication questions like a pharmacist?

Not reliably. In a Long Island University study, only 10 of 39 ChatGPT answers to real drug information questions were rated satisfactory, and all 8 answers that gave references cited sources that did not exist [5]. Use it as a starting point at most, and check a trusted drug reference.

Are pharmacy robots taking pharmacist jobs?

They are taking tasks more than jobs. Ballad Health's central pharmacy robots have dispensed nearly 9 million doses with zero picking errors, and it added IV compounding robots in 2025 [3]. Optum Rx runs more than 5 million AI image checks a month and says its tools support, not replace, human decisions, freeing pharmacists for clinical work [4].

Is pharmacy still a good career with AI?

It still pays well, with a median of $140,910 in May 2025 [2]. The best prospects are in clinical roles in hospitals and clinics rather than retail counting and filling [2]. ASHP, the health system pharmacists' society, has adopted a policy that treats AI as a tool with great potential to improve patient care [6].

What jobs can pharmacists move into if retail jobs shrink?

Common paths include health services management, which BLS expects to grow 24% from 2025 to 2035 [8], clinical research, where BLS lists the Pharm.D. as a qualifying degree for medical scientists [7], and pharmacy informatics, which overlaps with computer systems analyst work [9].
