AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace real estate agents?
Not the job, but much of the desk work. AI already writes listing copy, stages empty rooms, ranks which leads to call and tracks contract deadlines, while showings, negotiation, pricing calls and getting a deal to closing still need a licensed agent. BLS projects 2% growth for brokers and agents from 2025 to 2035, with about 40,400 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (41-9022.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promote listings with ads, MLS descriptions, flyers and social posts | AI does this today | ChatGPT, ListingCopy.ai, Canva | A general assistant turns your notes and the property facts into listing copy and posts in seconds, and Canva resizes one design for every network, so your job shifts to checking every fact against the MLS. [4][5][15] |
| Advise sellers on how to make the home more appealing to buyers | AI helps, you check | Virtual Staging AI, REimagineHome | Virtual staging furnishes an empty room photo in about 15 seconds, but NAR warns AI images must not misrepresent the property, and walking the house with the seller is still your call. [3][6] |
| Compare a home with recent sales to set a competitive price | AI helps, you check | Zillow Zestimate | Automated valuations give a fast starting point, but Zillow says its Zestimate is not an appraisal, and its median error was about 7% for homes not on the market, so condition and local knowledge still set the price. [9][10] |
| Follow up with new leads and past clients for referral business | AI helps, you check | Follow Up Boss, Lofty | Real estate CRMs now summarize a lead's history, draft the next text and rank who to call first, and Lofty sells an AI agent that books appointments, but trust is still built on your calls. [7][8] |
| Coordinate appointments to show homes to buyers | AI helps, you check | Lofty, Follow Up Boss | AI assistants in CRMs can answer an inquiry and set the appointment, but you still have to line up access, the seller's schedule and the route between homes. [7][8] |
| Prepare and explain buyer agreements, purchase contracts and disclosures | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Claude | AI can summarize a long HOA packet or inspection report in plain English, but contracts use state approved forms and since August 2024 a written buyer agreement must be signed before touring, which you explain and own. [5][11] |
| Keep up with listings, market trends and industry news | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Perplexity | Deep research tools gather and summarize market reports quickly, though they can state wrong numbers confidently, so you check them against MLS data before quoting a client. [4] |
| Interview clients to learn what kind of home they want and can afford | Still human | None | Buyers rarely say everything up front, and drawing out the school, commute or family worry behind a search takes a real conversation. |
| Accompany buyers on showings and inspections and advise on each home | Still human | None | Noticing a sagging floor, a busy road or a buyer's reaction in the kitchen requires being physically there. |
| Present offers and negotiate between buyers and sellers | Still human | None | Negotiation turns on emotion, timing and the other agent's tactics, and clients want a person fighting for them. |
| Advise clients on market conditions, mortgages and legal requirements | Still human | None | The REALTOR Code of Ethics bars misrepresenting pertinent facts, and NAR applies that to AI, so the advice and its accuracy remain the agent's responsibility. [3] |
| Work with escrow, lenders, inspectors and appraisers to keep the deal on track | AI helps, you check | ListedKit | AI transaction tools such as ListedKit read the contract, track every deadline and draft routine emails for you to approve, but rescuing a deal after a low appraisal or a late loan still takes your calls and relationships. [16] |
| Coordinate closings, title searches, signatures and the release of funds | Still human | None | Closings move large sums of money, and NAR warns that deepfakes are being used for wire fraud, so a person who knows the parties must verify every step. [3] |
| Visit and inspect properties before showing or listing them | Still human | None | Judging a property's condition and arranging repairs means walking through it in person. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace real estate agents?
Not according to current projections. BLS expects brokers and agents to grow 2% from 2025 to 2035, with about 40,400 openings a year [2]. AI is taking over marketing and follow up chores [5] [7], but buyers and sellers still want a licensed person for showings, negotiation and closing.
Can AI price my home better than a real estate agent?
Not reliably. Zillow says the Zestimate is not an appraisal [9], and a March 2025 figure put its nationwide median error at 1.94% for homes on the market and 7.06% for homes off the market [10]. On a $400,000 home, a 7% miss is about $28,000, which is why agents still walk the home and pull their own comparable sales.
Can real estate agents use AI to write listings and stage photos?
Yes, and many already do. NAR says AI illustrations of a home's potential may be ethically acceptable, but agents must not misrepresent pertinent facts, and enhancing listing photos with AI can carry legal risk [3]. Label virtually staged photos and fact check every AI written description.
Did the NAR settlement make agents easier to replace with AI?
It changed how buyer agents work rather than removing them. Since August 17, 2024, agents working with buyers must have a written agreement before touring a home, and offers of compensation are no longer allowed on the MLS [11]. That puts more weight on explaining your value and fees to clients face to face.
Is real estate still a good career with AI?
It can be, but income is uneven. Sales agents earned a median of $52,830 in May 2025, and brokers earned $73,220 [2]. Agents who let AI handle copy, staging and lead follow up [6] [7] get more hours for the showings and negotiations that actually close deals.
