AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace architects?
No. AI now spins out thousands of site layouts, renders a Revit model in seconds, answers code questions and does a first pass on submittals, but clients, engineers and the seal on the drawings keep the licensed architect in charge. BLS projects 4 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 6,900 openings a year, and every state requires a license.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (17-1011.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan site and building layouts for a project | AI helps, you check | TestFit, Autodesk Forma | TestFit generates thousands of site and building schemes in seconds and sorts them by parking ratio or yield, and Forma Explore compares early site layouts, but choosing the scheme that fits the client, the neighbors and the code is your call. [3][4] |
| Run feasibility and other predesign studies | AI helps, you check | TestFit, Autodesk Forma | Quick option testing shows what a site can hold before a client buys it, yet zoning variances, budgets and owner goals still need an architect to weigh them. [3][4] |
| Study a site's wind, noise and environmental impact early in design | AI helps, you check | Autodesk Forma | Autodesk Forma runs AI powered rapid wind and noise analysis and a beta embodied carbon check, which speeds early decisions, but these are quick estimates, not a substitute for detailed engineering. [3] |
| Prepare scale drawings and designs in CAD | AI helps, you check | AutoCAD Smart Blocks, Autodesk Assistant | AutoCAD can now find matching geometry and convert drawing objects into blocks, and an AI assistant answers software questions, but the drawing set and every dimension in it are still yours. [3] |
| Create 3D renderings and visuals of a design | AI helps, you check | Chaos Veras | Chaos Veras turns a Revit, SketchUp or Rhino model into design visuals in seconds without scene setup, which is great for early ideas, though final presentation images still need a careful eye for accuracy. [5] |
| Write proposals, marketing materials and presentations to win work | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Midjourney | Chatbots, image generators and grammar tools are the most common AI uses among architects, according to AIA research, but the pitch rests on your portfolio and your relationship with the client. [6] |
| Consult clients to set the functional and space needs of a building | Still human | None | Turning a client's hopes, budget and daily routines into a program takes listening and probing questions that software cannot do. |
| Meet with clients to review and revise drawings | Still human | None | Walking a client through tradeoffs and reading their reaction is relationship work that wins repeat business. |
| Integrate structural, mechanical and electrical engineering into one design | Still human | None | Coordinating engineers and deciding how to resolve conflicts between systems takes judgment about cost, safety and design intent, and the architect answers for the result. |
| Prepare and sign construction documents and specifications | AI helps, you check | UpCodes Copilot | UpCodes Copilot answers code questions for your project's location and builds compliance checklists with code citations, but NCARB says the licensed architect stays in control and is accountable for everything under their seal. [11][7] |
| Visit construction sites to check work against the plans | Still human | None | Spotting a wrong detail on site and settling it with the contractor needs someone physically there with authority. |
| Administer construction contracts and help clients award bids | AI helps, you check | Nomic | Tools like Nomic do a first pass review of submittals against your drawings and specs and help draft RFI answers, but approving payments, change orders and bids involves money, liability and negotiation that you own. [12] |
| Inspect existing structures and proposed building sites | Still human | None | Judging a building's condition or a site's suitability means walking it, touching it and knowing what to look for. |
| Direct drafters and technicians preparing drawings | Still human | None | Leading a team, checking their work and teaching juniors is a management role that stays with people. |

Architectural and engineering manager
Managers lead design teams, budgets and client relationships, and they decide how a firm uses AI rather than being replaced by it. It usually takes a license and years of project leadership. [9]

Quick questions
Will AI replace architects?
Unlikely in the coming years. BLS projects architect jobs to grow 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 6,900 openings a year, and all states require architects to be licensed [2]. NCARB's position is that the licensed architect stays in control of AI assisted work and is accountable for everything under their seal [7].
Can AI design a building by itself?
It can generate options, not a buildable, permitted design. TestFit produces thousands of layout schemes sorted by goals like parking ratio and yield [4], and Chaos Veras renders models in seconds [5]. Codes, engineering coordination and client needs still require an architect, who remains responsible for the standard of care [7].
How many architects use AI?
Still a minority. AIA research released in March 2025 found 6 percent of the profession regularly uses AI, 8 percent of firms had implemented AI solutions and another 20 percent were working on it [6]. Ninety percent of respondents had concerns such as inaccurate outputs and security [6].
What AI tools do architects use?
Popular ones include Autodesk Forma for early site analysis such as rapid wind and noise studies [3], TestFit for generative site and building layouts [4], Chaos Veras for AI rendering inside Revit, SketchUp and Rhino [5], UpCodes Copilot for building code research [11], and general chatbots and image generators [6].
Is architecture still a good career with AI?
It can be, if you accept a long path. The median architect earned $99,280 in May 2025, and licensing typically takes an accredited degree, a paid internship of about 3 years and the Architect Registration Examination [2]. Architects who use AI to test more options faster may win work from those who do not.
